FNSW PL2 R6 Wrap

Round six of the 17/18 FNSW Premier League 2 competition had the club at home against the Eastern Suburbs Hakoah Club from Sydney. After round five, Hakoah had a narrow lead in the Club Championship and look to be strong across all age groups. The challenge for the day then would be to see how the Boomerangs club measured up once again against one of the stronger clubs in this season’s PL2 competition.

Development Squad Matches
Hakoah brought with them the full complement of development squads to play games against the ‘Baby Boomers’ in 10s and 11s boys and 11/12 girls. Three very close matches ensued again providing great opportunity for further development of the pre-competitive age groups of Boomerangs players.

FNSW PL2 R5 Wrap

Round five of the 17/18 FNSW Premier League 2 competition saw the Boomerangs club travel again up the highway to Sydney’s western suburbs, with a competitive round of matches against Raiders Futsal at Wetherill Park. Raiders have regularly been a top performing team in PL2 and are generally in the mix for promotion to PL1 at the end of every season.

Development Squad Matches
Raiders could not offer games against development squads, so matches were organised against Mountain Majik at Blacktown. Majik have a comprehensive junior development program which sees them as one of the top clubs in NSW. Games were arranged for each of the development squads including an early match for 11 boys, a mid-morning match for the 11/12 girls and two afternoon matches for the 10 boys. The young ‘baby boomer’ squads continue to develop and it is matches such as these – against well coached and drilled Sydney teams – that will provide them with the tough competition to allow them to continue growing as players and as teams. We thank the Majik club (a PL1 club) for inviting us to play.

FNSW PL2 R4 Wrap

Round four of the 17/18 FNSW Premier League 2 competition saw the Boomerangs club at home up against Phoenix Futsal – a club which has aspirations for the Club Championship and promotion to PL1. Both clubs sat atop the Club Championship table before this round (with the Boomers only slightly ahead), so this round was a good test of where the club is at for this PL2 season.

Development Squad Matches
The development squads each had games in the lead up to the nine competitive PL2 matches for this round. The 10 boys took on a highly competitive Gungahlin team and were pushed all the way in an evenly contested match. The 11 boys and 11/12 girls took on visiting Phoenix sides and again had some terrific competition against the travellers. These young ‘baby boomer’ squads are coming along well in their development and those who ‘graduate’ to the competitive age groups next year (and beyond) will be well and truly ready for the competition.

The 12 boys had a very solid game against a skilful visiting Phoenix side. The boys gave the visitors little time to settle with a strong opening, including three goals in the first ten minutes of the match. FNSW PL2 R3 Wrap

Round three of the 17/18 FNSW Premier League 2 competition saw the Boomerangs club at home at the AIS against Central Coast Futsal – a club which had, this season, been promoted to the PL2 competition from State League.

Development Squad Matches
The Central Coast Club did not bring any development squads with them on the long haul to the ACT, so the youngest Boomerangs again played locally arranged matches – the 10 boys against the 11/12 girls and the 11 boys up against local junior side Gungahlin. Both matches were entertaining, fast and full of high skill level futsal. Importantly also, all four teams showed a good focus on defence and the games were tight with goals precious for all sides.

12 Boys: Boomerangs 4 – 3 Central Coast Futsal Club (ht 2-2)
The 12 boys had a tough match against a strong Central Coast side that has had mixed fortunes so far this season. These two evenly matched teams battled it out in the first half to end up all square as the halftime whistle blew (at 2-2). FNSW PL2 R2 Wrap

The second round of the 17/18 FNSW Premier League 2 (PL2) competition saw the Boomerangs club travel to Redfern to take on the Sydney Futsal Club at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.

Development Squad Matches
The Sydney Futsal Club provided some strong opposition for the 11 development boys to play and it was a good hitout for the young Boomerangs boys. Whilst being generally outplayed and outmuscled, the lads are continuing to develop their play and learning to match it with tougher opposition. Earlier in the day, the 10 boys development squad took on Sydney City Eagles across town at the new Michael Clarke Recreation Centre in Western Sydney. There was no game for the 11/12 development girls squad.

12 Boys: Boomerangs 0 – 8 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 0-3)
The 12 boys had a tough time on their hands against yet another quality 12 boys team. They matched it with the Sydney Futsal 12 boys in the first half but failed to take advantage of the opportunities in the front third of the court. The second half saw the home team power home full of confidence and some terrific teamwork. The 12 boys are continuing to develop their skills and team play, but lack some of the size and physicality of the top teams in this competition.

FNSW PL2 R1 Wrap

After what seemed like a long off-season, Saturday 8 October saw the 2017-18 Football NSW Premier League 2 season kick off with a home round against the Sydney City Eagles club.

Curtain raiser matches included a scratch match between the Boomerangs 10 boys and 11/12 girls teams. It was a very competitive match with both teams working hard at both ends of the court, and with only a couple of goals separating the two teams. The 10 boys are coming on well under the watchful eye of coaches Nick Rathjen and Ahmed Ugool as are the 11/12 girls who are also building their skills and team play nicely with Nick van Aalst, Grace Basser-Silk and Isobel D’Amico curating their development.

The next game was also a development squad game featuring 11-year-old boys from both the Boomerangs and visiting Eagles. The match was an even encounter which provided an opportunity for the boys to have solid run against some tougher Sydney opposition. Again, the Boomerangs young boys are developing their individual and team skills well under Ben Basser-Silk and performed creditably.

NSW Futsal State Championships 2017

A terrific weekend of futsal saw ten Boomerangs junior teams experience the NSW State Futsal Championships – some players for the first time, others returning after competing in 2016. The primary purpose of competing at this event is as a pre-season warm-up for the upcoming NSW Premier League 2 competition.

The three youngest teams -10 boys, 11 boys and 11/12 girls played a series of (non-competitive) matches at Valentine Sports Park (10 boys) and Blacktown Leisure Centre (11 boys and 11/12 girls). Players on all three teams had a fantastic weekend, winning some games, and losing others, but importantly learning more about how to play futsal against some really tough and highly skilled opposition. The increasing level of skill in these players (and teams) is becoming more evident as they are exposed to higher levels of competition.

The 12 boys – the youngest of the competitive age groups – played four matches at Blacktown for a win, a draw and two losses. The 13 girls also played at Blacktown and in a strong pool won their first game and lost the following two in tight, close encounters that could have gone either way. They were unlucky not to make finals.

The 14 boys played at Windsor and after handing out a hammering (10-0) to their first opponent were themselves on the receiving end of two defeats. The 15 girls also played their matches at Windsor and ended up making the quarter-finals after a win, a loss and a draw in the pool matches. Unfortunately, they could not overcome stiff opposition in the quarter-final to progress further. They were certainly not disgraced in this solid hit out.

The 16 boys won their first match in a canter 11-0 and their third 6-4, but lost their middle game 2-8. They made the semi-final but could not put together a winning performance to make it to the final. The 18 girls were dominant in their first match winning 6-1, but lost their second by the narrowest of margins (0-1). They won their final pool match 5-1 to miss out on the semi-finals by a miserly one-goal goal differential.

The youth men went through their pool undefeated with an 11-2 first up win followed by an exciting 7-7 draw and a 5-3 victory. Unfortunately, they were outplayed in their semi-final and could not replicate the success of last year. Again, they showed some real potential and should be up amongst the leaders in the PL2 competition.

All in all a terrific weekend of futsal with all ten Boomerangs junior teams getting valuable court time together in preparation for the upcoming season. The (competitive) pool rounds returning eleven wins, three draws and eight losses from the 22 round robin matches. This hit out will help all teams in preparation for their upcoming Round 1 matches next weekend against Sydney City Eagles in the PL2 competition.

FNSW PL 17/18

Football NSW has declared the leagues and released the draws for the 17/18 summer futsal season. Boomerangs FS will be competing in the PL2 competition.

F-League 2017

07/03/2017 – PUMA F-League Announcement

Football NSW wishes to announce that the PUMA F-League Competition will not be delivered by the governing body of the state for the 2017 season.

Football NSW conducted an application process in preparation for the 2017 competition and unfortunately, through this process, did not receive the required number of applications to deliver a viable competition consistent with the standards set in previous seasons

During the application process, Football NSW received feedback that the timing of the season is a challenge given the various football commitments taking place during this period and this may have been a determining factor in PUMA F-League Clubs electing not to apply for the 2017 season.

Football NSW will continue to engage with the Futsal community and fellow member federations in relation to the ongoing development of Futsal and specifically any demand for a viable National Futsal Competition in future seasons.

Football NSW greatly appreciates the assistance and support of the PUMA F-League Clubs and Officials since the Competition’s inception and is hopeful that the organisation can contribute to a National Futsal Competition in future seasons.

Review – FNSW PL1 Elimination Semi-Final Men

By virtue of finishing fourth on the season competition ladder, the Boomerangs men’s team qualified for the finals series of the Football NSW Premier League futsal competition and were drawn, in the first weekend of finals, in an elimination final against third-placed Enfield Rovers. The qualifying final saw minor premiers, Inner West Magic take on Dural Warriors.

The men’s matches topped off a big day of finals action held at the Dural futsal centre, with the qualifying finals being played on Court 1, and the elimination finals on Court 2. The match’s kick-off time was delayed by just over 30 minutes as three early games on the ‘elimination court’ had gone to overtime and some to penalties.

A strong team was selected from the Boomerangs men’s roster and given the shared head-to-head results of the regular season against the Rovers it was expected that a close match would ensue. Continue reading “Review – FNSW PL1 Elimination Semi-Final Men” →
