FNSW PL2 Finals Preview

The pointy end of the season has arrived – and for many, too quickly!

The club has had a strong season in the FNSW PL2 competition and of the nine competitive age groups have six teams competing in the finals series on the weekend of 19/20 January.

Of the six teams to make finals this season, one team finished fourth (13 girls), three second place finishes (15 girls, 16 boys and 18 women) and two Premierships – for the 19 men and open age women.

In a refreshed finals series this season, the ‘double chance’ has been removed for the those teams finishing in the top two and all teams will now face an all elimination finals series. On Saturday 19 January, at Dural, fourth placed teams will take on competition table toppers and second take on third place getters.

13 Girls

The 13 girls, having finished fourth this season, will take on premiers, SD Raiders. Whilst the Boomers 13 girls did not record a win against this team during the season, they pushed the premiers all the way with a 3-4 loss away at Fairfield and a 3-3 draw at home in Round 12. SD Raiders finished the season with a single loss and one draw to go with their 12 wins.

FNSW 18/19 PL2 R14 Wrap

Round 14 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition – the final regular round for the season – was critical for the club in its endeavours to claim the Club Championship. Five of the six teams in finals contention had already locked in their top four slots, with the 13s looking to claim fourth spot with a win and the Youth Men and 15 girls looking to lock in, or grab, the Premiership.

Earlier this season (Round 7) the club fared well against the cellar-dwelling West City Crusaders, losing only one match (12 boys) and drawing two others (youth and men) of the nine competitive age matches.

Development Squad Matches
The West City Crusaders did not field development age teams this season, and as there was a focus on making finals and on club championship points this final round, games against other teams were difficult to arrange. Many of the parents of the development squad teams also appreciated having the weekend off prior to Christmas to finalise their festive season preparations.

12 BOYS:
Boomerangs 2 – 5 West City Crusaders (ht 2 – 3)
The 12 boys wanted desperately to win this match to finish the season on a positive and thought they were in with a decent shot given that they lost the Round 7 match by a single goal only.

Round 12 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition – the third last round of the regular season – was a home round of matches against Sydney’s Southern District (SD) Raiders.

SD Raiders have taken the PL2 competition by storm this season after promotion from the now-defunct FNSW State League. They have strength across all their age groups and are the only club that the Boomerangs failed to outscore for Club Championship points in the first half of the season.

To check out the photos of Saturday’s matches head to the Boomerangs photo site.

Development Squad Matches
SD Raiders kindly brought their development squads down the highway a little earlier so a series of matches could be played across two smaller courts to give all our development age groups a hit our against competitive opposition.

The 9 boys took on SD Raiders 11/12 girls, the 10 boys and 11 boys both played the visiting 11 boys team and the 11/12 girls from each club squared off against each other. There were some terrific games across the first 90 minutes of the day and plenty of great teamwork and goals scored by all teams.

12 BOYS:
Boomerangs 2 – 17 Southern Districts Raiders (ht 1 – 8)
The 12 boys will probably like to wipe this match from their memories fairly quickly. For the second round in a row, the Boomers youngest competitive boys weren’t at all competitive – being given a futsal lesson from teams that sit atop the competition ladder and have handed out thrashing to most teams they face each week. No doubt the coaches will be running the boys through the match video and highlighting all the good things the opposition did – and to aspire to execute as they did. There is no growth without learning.
Goals to Tomer Doron (2)
Ladder Position: 7th ( – )

Rounds 10 and 11 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition were played as a double-header weekend, with the Boomerangs first leg at home (Saturday 1 December) against Sydney Futsal Club and the second leg away (Sunday 2 December) against Sydney City Eagles.

Development Squad Matches
Boomerangs FS v Sydney Futsal
Sydney Futsal Club brought down the requisite 11 boys team and 11/12 girls. The 11 boys team was a bit light on numbers, but with the addition of a few of their travelling girls, they gave our 11 boys a decent hit out.

The 10 boys also took on the 11 boys in an inter-club rivalry match and the 9 boys took on a team from the newly formed futsal training program, Accelerate.

Boomerangs FS v Sydney City Eagles
The Sunday trip to the Michael Clarke Centre had only the 11 boys travel, as the Eagles have no 11/12 team, nor any younger age groups in a development academy.

Round 9 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition was a home match, split into two, with the first leg played away in Wollongong – for the Youth Men, Women and Men’s team (on Sunday 18 November) and the remaining competitive matches played on Saturday 24 November at the new Q-One Indoor Sports Centre in Queanbeyan.

(The youth, women and men’s matches were played a week earlier to allow members of those teams – and coaches from across the club – to attend the wedding of the Club President)

Development Squad Matches
South Coast Taipans brought with them an array of junior development teams, allowing ten matches to be scheduled across 11 and 12 girls and 9, 10 and 11 boys. These matches, scheduled earlier in the day before the competitive matches,  were keenly contested and apart from the joy and fun it brings the players to play against players representing other regions, it is also a wonderful opportunity to develop their skills, teamwork and understanding of futsal.

Boomerangs FS seeking Business Club Partners for 2018/19

Boomerangs FS, the number one futsal club for the ACT and region, has developed a new business opportunity that seeks to build a business community through a business loyalty program where the members of the club will be able to call on the services of its club partners.

The program has the potential to expand a business client/customer base which will in return benefit each partner. The benefits for club members may include discounts on services and potentially repeat player sponsorships in future years.

Across 2018/19 there will be opportunities for businesses taking up this offer to participate in Continue reading “Sponsor a Boomerangs FS player!”

Round 8 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition signalled the start of the second half of the season and was a home round taking on Raiders Futsal. In Round 1 of the season, away at the Raiders new home court, the Boomers teams did particularly well, winning four, drawing two and losing only one of the matches that impact on the Club Championship (age 14 boys and up).

The objective of home rounds is always to improve on away results, and it was pleasing that the day did indeed pan out that way with five of the seven matches that contribute to the Club Championship as victories to the Boomerangs teams, and two very close matches in the younger competitive age groups (12 boys/13 girls) resulting in a loss and a draw.

Development Squad Matches
Raiders Futsal kindly came down the highway a little earlier to provide the development squads with matches. The 9 Boys took on their Boomers stablemates, the 11 girls, but the 10 and 11 boys and the 11/12 girls had Raiders opposition to play against. Whilst results aren’t the most important thing at these development ages, the quality of the futsal is improving and the kids understanding of the game is turning them into better players.

FNSW Futsal Cup Quarter Final

After defeating Raiders Futsal in the Round of 16, the 2018 FNSW Futsal Cup draw had the Boomerangs senior men’s side scheduled to take on Dural Warriors in the Quarter Finals on 14 November 2018.

Dural Warriors had defeated Eastern Suburbs Hakoah in the opening round to progress to the final eight and had been in some solid form so far this season, dropping only five competition points (one loss, one draw) in the FNSW PL1 competition across the first half of the season to sit on top of the league ladder.

Dural has traditionally been a strong PL1 men’s team and is usually littered with Australian representative players. They are also coached by the most recent Australian Futsalroos coach.

Over the years – both in PL1 and in the F-League – it would be fair to say that Dural has had the best of matchups against Boomerangs men’s team, however, on nearly all occasions the matches are close, tight and entertaining tussles, where high-quality futsal is played.

This match was no different, with the travelling Boomerangs (with players having driven three hours to Valentine Park after a day’s work or schooling) starting the match strongly and having the best of the first five or so minutes of the match. However, as Dural settled into their rhythm, they ‘owned’ the ball far more than the Boomerangs and were camped for much of the remainder of the first half in their offensive end.

The Boomerangs men defended extremely well, with their team hussle-defence working well with each player supporting others. A 0-0 half-time score representing the fine work they did in protecting their goals.

The second half saw Continue reading “FNSW Futsal Cup Quarter Final”

Round 7 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition was a home round taking on West City Crusaders – the only club that Boomerangs teams had yet to come up against so far this season. The Crusaders were well set at the bottom of the Club Championship table, so it was hoped that the Boomerangs could pick up valuable points across the day’s matches and to also enhance teams’ opportunity to make finals.

Development Squad Matches
West City Crusaders have no development squads, so the Boomerangs youngest teams played off against each other, the 9 boys pushing as hard as they could against the 11/12 girls and the 10 boys taking on the 11 boys in what is always a close encounter.

Round 6 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition had the Boomerangs club on the road for the fifth time in the first six rounds of season 18/19. The opposition was Phoenix Futsal, a club playing out of the Hornsby PCYC. Rounds against Phoenix in previous seasons have always been closely contested, and this round would likely be no different.

Development Squad Matches
The 11 boys and 11/12 girls started the day’s action at Hornsby on small courts against Phoenix opposition. The two teams performed extremely well against a robust opposition and came out on the positive side of the goal-scoring ledger (even though these games are never officially scored).

These two teams are coming along nicely as the young Boomerangs learn what is needed to compete at this NSW Premier League level.

12 Boys: Boomerangs 6 – 2 Phoenix Futsal (ht 3 – 1)
The 12 boys finally had an opportunity to register a win, against a Phoenix team that was also struggling at the wrong end of the competition ladder. The boys were very solid in defence, and creative in attack and seized on goal scoring opportunities as they arose. Next week will also present an opportunity for a win (against the Crusaders) and this should lead to an improved second half of the season.
Goals to Mikey Pratezina (2), Daniel Barbatano, Arron Cocks, Hayden Gardiner, AJ Malauulu
Ladder Position: 7th ( +1 )
