Round 5 PREVIEW v Enfield Rovers

This weekend sees the nine Boomerangs teams play the Enfield Rovers at home at the AIS.

The Rovers sit just above Boomerangs on the Club Championship table after four rounds – and like the Boomerangs have not had the start to the season they would have hoped for.

Last season Enfield made the finals (top four) in the 16 boys and girls, and their Open Women’s team. Boomerangs 16 boys defeated Enfield in the major semi final and Grand Final after being defeated twice during the home and away series. The Boomerangs Youth Men also made the semi finals last season over Enfield, on goal difference alone. The Rovers will be keen to atone for missing out at the Boomerangs expense!

This season, their best success over the four rounds to date have been with their 14 boys, 16 girls and Open Women. The Boomerangs have had solid starts from the 12 boys, 16 girls, and both Open Men’s and Women’s teams. There will be some tremendous match ups during the day.

The games are being played at the AIS (training halls) on Saturday 9th November and this is the last home match day for a while as the Boomerangs have three away weekends in a row to round out November. So come along and support your local team!

Boys 12 — 12.00pm
Girls 12 — 12.45pm
Boys 14 — 1.30pm
Girls 14 — 2.15pm
Boys 16 — 3.00pm
Girls 16 — 3.45pm
Youth Men — 4.30pm
Open Women — 5.15pm
Open Men — 6.10pm

Round 4 v Quake Review

Round 4 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League was played away in Campbelltown against Quake on an unseasonally hot day for early November. The shorter commute for the Boomerangs teams was certainly appreciated, however the reduced amount of travel time did not convert to better performances on the court.

In all age groups however (barring the youngest girls team) the Boomerangs teams were all involved in tight and fairly evenly contested match ups. The frustration was not being able to convert more of these close match ups into wins by slotting the ball into the net more frequently!

12 Boys

Boomerangs 0 – 3 Quake

For the second week in a row the 12 boys felt what it was like to be on the receiving end of a stronger, more physical team. This talented team certainly has the skills and the teamwork, but they will need to learn to ‘muscle up’ on bigger, more physical opponents if they are to win more games. The boys weren’t disgraced and there were solid performances all over the court, but try as they may, they couldn’t put one in the back of the net.

12 Girls

Boomerangs 3 – 12 Quake

The 12 girls were thoroughly outclassed and outplayed by a strong Quake unit. Having few substitutes and no regular keeper has really hurt this team so far this year. There are signs that there are some wins coming, but they need to perform more consistently, especially at the defensive end.

14 Boys

Boomerangs 1 – 2 Quake

A closely fought exciting tussle between two fairly evenly matched teams. There was nothing in this match right the way through, and it was a credit to the Quake boys that they continued the pressure and teamwork right until the final whistle. Attempting more shots on goal wouldn’t be a bad thing for the Boomerangs 14s – but credit must go to the Quake defence for not allowing any easy shots.  This Boomerangs boys team is building together nicely and we should expect some more positive results as the season progresses.

14 Girls

Boomerangs 2 – 4 Quake

A good effort by the Boomerangs 14 girls against a strong Quake team. And another close game where the difference may well have been the finishing ability of the Quake girls. Again, this 14 girls team will certainly improve as the season progresses and will earn their fair share of wins by season end.

16 Boys

Boomerangs 0 – 4 Quake

The Quake boys came out hard in the first half and put the Boomerangs boys to the sword with four goals in the first 20 minutes. The boys must have listened to the half-time talk though, as they certainly matched it up much better with the Quake boys in the second half. If they could have played this well in the first half, the result would certainly have been different. A learning experience for the boys, but they are showing that they will listen and put into practice the coaching staff’s wise words.

16 Girls

Boomerangs 2 – 2 Quake

A win gone begging. The 16 girls dominated this game for easily 75% of it. The Quake girls had a strong dose of self belief come their way late in the second half and started taking it to the young Boomerangs girls – who till that stage looked comfortable and had set up a nice two goal buffer. The first goal for the Quake in the second half certainly drove them on and it was probably good fortune for the Boomerang girls that it took them till the final minute to score the equaliser – so as not to give them time to score another! A missed opportunity to register a win for the 16 girls.

Youth Men

Boomerangs 2 – 1 Quake

Finally — this talented youth roster clicked and put in a massive effort. With speed, agility, team work and intensity of a quality that was often seen in the 2013 F-League, these boys worked hard to knock over a good Quake team, and to register their long awaited first win for the season. Much is expected of this squad and they will be able to take a deal of confidence from this win to kick their season along.

Open Women

Boomerangs 2 – 5 Quake

In a game that was always going to be tough for the Boomerangs women, the result probably surprised no one. Without three of their five starters in Aurouseau, Roche and Crittenden (and a couple of bench players also absent), this was always going to be an uphill battle against the form team in the women’s competition. The 16 girls that backed up for this game held their own, but the lack of experienced women really impacted on the team’s ability to score goals, and to defend their own goal. Not a pretty game to watch with much niggle and plenty of fouls. Let’s hope a full squad is available for the next time these teams match up to give a real indication of how they compare.

Open Men

Boomerangs 3 – 1 Quake

A tough, physical and intense encounter saw the Boomerangs men hold off a quality Quake unit. Goals were hard to come by and a 1-0 lead going into half time looked like it might be the final score. A second though, mid way through the second half forced the hand of Quake who then went with a ‘fifth man’ play. The Boomerangs men defended very well against this tactic and pressured well to make a couple of pass intercepts, one of which saw a long range goal with not long left on the clock.

This Boomerangs men’s team has come together really well this season and are playing consistently good futsal. At the beginning of the season, one of the dark horses for the premiership, but after four weeks and remaining unbeaten this team is quietly being talked about as genuine title contenders for 13/14.

Round 4 PREVIEW v Campbelltown Quake

This weekend sees the nine Boomerangs teams plus their supporters once again head up the Hume Highway to play the Quake on their home turf at Minto.

The Quake sit in fourth place on the Club Championship table after three rounds with 15 wins and 12 losses. (Boomerangs have 9 wins, 3 draws, 15 losses)

Last season Quake made the finals (top four) in the 12, 14 and 16 boys, as well as their Open Men and Women. As a club they finished the Club Championship in fourth position comfortably between Mascot and Phoenix.

This season, their best success over the three rounds to date have been with their 12 boys and girls, their 14 girls and their youth men (all with 2 wins/1 loss), and their 16 boys and open women (both with 3 straight wins) have been stand outs. Their three rounds to date have been against Mountain Majik, Phoenix and Enfield Rovers.

The games are being played at Minto Indoor Sports Stadium, Redfern St, Minto.

Boys 12 — 12.00pm
Girls 12 — 12.45pm
Boys 14 — 1.30pm
Girls 14 — 2.15pm
Boys 16 — 3.00pm
Girls 16 — 3.45pm
Youth Men — 4.30pm
Open Women — 5.15pm
Open Men — 6.10pm

Round 3 v Majik – Review

Round 3 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League was the second home game for the season for the Boomerangs – and the first at the AIS.

And it ended being not a day where Boomerangs showed their true form, or were at their best, in any of the age groups barring the 16 girls and open men. Just two wins from the nine games, and seven defeats.

The Majik, on the other hand, played exceptionally well, and it was clear to see that across all age groups they are definitely Premier League material. A combination of some great Super League teams of last season with some smart player acquisitions, has allowed them to transition to the Premier League level excellently. They will certainly not be in the Premier League just to make up the numbers this year.

12 Boys

Boomerangs 1 – 2 Mountain Majik

The 12 boys suffered their first loss of the season to a hard working Majik unit. The boys will need to lift to continue to win week in week out during this season. They certainly have the talent at their disposal to do it!

12 Girls

Boomerangs 0 – 6 Mountain Majik

Evidence that the younger Majik girls are a great team and will do well this year. The Boomerangs girls just weren’t quite up to that same level on Saturday.

14 Boys

Boomerangs 1 – 8 Mountain Majik

A solid defeat. The 14 boys need to lift all over the court if they are to remain competitive during the season – in the easy and the tough games.

14 Girls

Boomerangs 0 – 2 Mountain Majik

A good effort by the Boomerangs 14 girls against another strong Majik team. Although the Majik were never seriously threatened, the Boomerangs girls retained their defensive efforts and did not allow the score to embarrass them. A loss – but a good solid effort.

16 Boys

Boomerangs 1 – 9 Mountain Majik

A blow out. The boys need more time playing together to get the teamwork – and importantly the defensive work – happening.

16 Girls

Boomerangs 6 – 0 Mountain Majik

Wonderful effort from a full strength 16 girls brought a little sunshine to the middle of the day. This team will do OK this year whilst they maintain their strongest team playing week in week out.

Youth Men

Boomerangs 0 – 6 Mountain Majik

This team, comprising the best of last year’s Grand Final winning 16s and semi finalist youth team, are taking some time to adjust to the tougher, more physical and faster youth league. The young 17 and 18 year olds need to lift in their weekly challenge against other teams – some made up primarily of 19 year olds.

Open Women

Boomerangs 0 – 2 Mountain Majik

What can we say – the Majik women were just too good.  The Boomerangs women seemed to struggle to find a path to goal and rarely troubled the Majik keeper.

Open Men

Boomerangs 9 – 2 Mountain Majik

A nice way to end the day – the following match report from Dan De Nardi of Football NSW

Boomerangs topple Mountain

Boomerangs 9 (Daniel Bennett x2, Ryan Keir x2, Kristian Collins, Jason O’Dwyer, Callum Smith, Daniel Fulton, Michael Reeve) Mountain Majik 2 (Andrew Stevenson, Corey Bizco)

Boomerangs gave newcomers Mountain Majik a dusting at the AIS Training Halls on Saturday night, turning a tight 2-1 halftime edge into a 9-2 thumping to go top of the table.

Daniel Bennett and Kristian Collins elevated Boomerangs to a 2-1 halftime advantage before the home side cut loose in the second stanza – Bennett grabbing another, Ryan Keir bagging a double, and Jason O’Dwyer, Callum Smith, Daniel Fulton and Michael Reeve also adding their names to a congested scoresheet. Andrew Stevenson and Corey Bizco were Majik’s goalscorers.

Boomerangs remain undefeated and have put the pressure right on Dural and Inner West to perform on their return to league competition next week.

Boomerangs co-coach Kristian Collins called it a good win. “We made it harder for ourselves than we had to and it was only 2-1 at the break, so we changed a couple of things that really put it together in the second half,” he said.

“It’s fantastic to be still undefeated but we do have some tough games coming up, starting with Campbelltown next week who have been a real bogey side for us.”

Mountain coach Fabio Macerola was succinct. “We were in it at halftime, but we weren’t in it at fulltime,” he said.

“Actually it was a good eye opener for us as it shows how much we have to step up. Boomerangs were at a different level to our first two games – quicker, more physical, more quality players… but we still have half our side to come back so I’m not overly concerned.”

Round 3 PREVIEW v Mountain Majik

This coming weekend sees the Boomerangs at home against newly promoted Mountain Majik.

The Majik blitzed all-comers in the NSW State League last season and duly earnt promotion to the Premier League. The last time these two clubs met was three years ago when both were in the Super League.

So far, in the two rounds played to date, the Majik have certainly been very impressive. After rounds against Quake and Enfield, the Majik sit in second place on the Championship table with 11 wins and seven losses from their 18 games over the first two weekends.

This trip to the nation’s capital though will likely be a stern test for this club.

Their 12 boys are one and one, but come up against a Boomerangs 12 boys in good form and playing some nice futsal. Their 12 girls have looked impressive with 2 straight wins and the Boomerang girls will need to be sharp to match it with them.

The Majik 14 boys have split their opening two games but have looked impressive in both these outings. The 14 girls are strong, like their 12s and have two straight wins to their name.

Both the 16 boys and 16 girls for the Majik have split their opening games and both these games against the Boomerangs teams will be close affairs.

The Boomerangs youth men will be looking to chalk up their first win, but will have a fight on their hands as the Majik youth have won both their close fought matches so far.

The Boomerangs women will be confident of a win over the Majik ladies who have yet to land a winning blow – but it may well be closer than we think.

The Boomerangs men – if they play with the same grit and determination as last week – but without the 5-goal lapse in concentration – should be able to better the men from the mountain: but no game is a certainty!

So the battle will be on, for the individual teams, as well as for club championship points. If Boomerangs teams are going to seriously challenge for finals, they need to step up and play some good futsal. And as a club, if it is to avoid the relegation concerns that were worrying in the last few rounds of last year, teams need to be able to find ways of winning matches and earning valuable club championship points.

Saturday’s games are at the AIS with the 12 boys kicking off proceedings at 12 noon. Open Womens and Mens from 5.15pm.

Round 2 v Mascot – Review

Round 2 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League was the first away game for the season and perhaps the thick smoke from the devastating bushfires that filled the air on the trip up to Mascot was a portent of the day that the Boomerang’s teams were to have.

The club started very well with both the 12 boys and girls winning their encounters. At this stage, some might have thought the day held much better fortune than eventuated. But a run of five consecutive defeats to the well drilled Mascot Viper squads meant that the men’s and women’s teams were fighting to add at least a modicum of respectability to the day’s outing. A win and a draw from the final two games of the day – and a very late finish – meant that the Boomerangs players were still heading back down the highway well after midnight with ten points in their pockets (three wins and a draw) and a decent dose of ‘reality check’ after the great start to season 13/14 in Round 1 against Dural.

A serious injury to a Mascot Viper youth player added to the drama of the day. We wish him well in his recovery, and hope the injury is not season-ending. .

12 Boys
Boomerangs 3 – 2 Mascot Vipers

The 12 boys continued their winning ways with another solid performance against the Mascot 12s. Strong performances right across the team meant that no matter who Coach O’Neill had on the court, they did the job. This game though, was tougher than the first against Dural, but the boys fought hard right till the end and held on for a great win. Two from two from the 12 boys.

12 Girls
Boomerangs 4 – 2 Mascot Vipers

Like the boys, the 12 girls also played well right across the playing roster. With a good number of players this week and a decent bench to work with, the girls didn’t suffer the fatigue of last week and remained in control till the end. A great win and perhaps a glimpse of their future form.

14 Boys
Boomerangs 2 – 7 Mascot Vipers

As expected the Vipers 14 boys were a very slick outfit with many familiar faces from last year’s dominating side. Our boys, made up of mostly 13 year olds, would have their work cut out for them. After going in to the half time break a couple down and being very competitive, hopes were high in the second half but they were dashed early by some seriously good futsal from the Mascot boys. A 2-7 loss not the result we were looking for but positive signs from our lads.

14 Girls

Boomerangs 1 – 7 Mascot Vipers

Another Mascot side that was right up there last season and many familiar faces for our young ladies to face. Mascot started in ominous fashion banging in five goals unanswered in the first half in what was a disjointed performance by the young Boomerangs team. The half time talk was inspiring and saw the girls lift and only concede two goals while scoring one of their own in what was a much better performance. This team will no doubt get better as the season progresses and bring home some good wins.

16 Boys
Boomerangs 3 – 6 Mascot Vipers

Once again Mascot fielded a strong team in its 16 boys line up and some familiar faces from previous seasons. And whilst the Boomerangs 16 boys put in a whole hearted display, they could not curtail the slick passing and movement of the Vipers. The Boomer boys showed glimpses of great play, but never for consistently long enough to truly trouble the opposition. This team certainly has improvement in it and better performances will come.

16 Girls
Boomerangs 4 – 5 Mascot Vipers

The 16 girls welcomed back F-League player Phoebe Worth for this encounter with Vipers; a team that belted our girls 6-0 on both occasions last season. This wasn’t going to be an easy match and from the outset the Boomerangs girls were playing catch up with Vipers scoring first 10 minutes into the first half. Boomerangs equalised soon after only for the Vipers to take the lead straight back, a trend that would continue into the second half. Boomerangs levelled the scores at 4-4 with less than a minute remaining and it seemed would get away with a draw, only to be left heartbroken as the Vipers scored with the very last kick of the game to steal the win.

Youth Men
Boomerangs 0 – 4 Mascot Vipers

This is a game that the Boomerangs youth will want to forget. Mascot built their dominance in this game on the back of some very solid defence – not allowing any easy balls into the front court. The path to goal was always blocked by one or two Vipers players. And when the Mascot youth moved it themselves into the front court, the Boomerangs did not respond quickly enough, or with enough of a physical presence to halt the goal-ward progression. The match was ended prematurely – probably suiting the Boomerangs rather than the Vipers – when a Mascot Youth player was seriously injured smashing into the goal upright with just under ten minutes remaining in the second half. A significant delay ensued whilst an ambulance was called to tend the player.

Open Women

Boomerangs 6 – 1 Mascot Vipers

The Boomerangs Women provided the lift that was needed for the supporters in the penultimate game of the day. Five consecutive losses in the middle of the day, needed correcting, and the much later than scheduledstart seemed to suit the Boomerangs girls better as they came out of the gate fast, scoring two early goals and not letting up for the remainder of the match. This was a comfortable win and they were never threatened. If they continue to play this well, this team is well set for a dominant season on the back of the successful F-League season and given the way they have played and comfortably won over the past two weekends.

Open Men
Boomerangs 5 – 5 Mascot Vipers

Wow – #whatagame.

This is a game that had to be seen to be believed. It had everything. The Boomerangs started off strongly and dominated the first ten minutes scoring three lovely goals and controlling the floor. So confident were they that it seemed a rout was on the way. But someone then turned the switch on for the Vipers men and they rallied to rip the game right open, themselves scoring five goals in the last 15 minutes of the first half.

If the first half was all about goal scoring and momentum swings, then the second half was a battle of attrition and a lift in intensity that you don’t usually see till finals time. Both these teams wanted to win, and win badly.  The Boomerangs managed to score two hard earned goals and successfully prevent the Vipers from scoring to end the match with honours shared at 5-5. A fascinating and intense match up. If these two teams don’t feature in finals futsal this season, then the teams that do make it will be very very good.

So after a mixed bag of results for Boomerangs teams – two wins to start, then five consecutive defeats, topped off with a win and a draw – ten competition points were secured, against what will most definitely be a top four club again this season. These are the stern tests that the Boomerangs must face, and win, in order to itself move up the table as a club.

Round 2 PREVIEW v Mascot Vipers

This weekend sees the nine Boomerangs teams plus their supporters trundle up Highway 31 to Mascot to play the Vipers on their home turf.

The Vipers last season were strong across most grades and finished the Club Championship in third place – behind only Dural and Inner West. Their 67 wins and 19 draws from 126 games in season 2012/2013 saw them comfortably ahead of fourth placed Campbelltown Quake.

Based on last year’s form, Mascot were the most consistent of all clubs with good performances from all age groups barring 16 Boys. Indeed, they had six of their nine teams represent the club in finals futsal. A strong effort will be required from all Boomerangs teams this weekend if the club is to return home with some club championship points this weekend.

The games are being played at the All Sorts Indoor Sports Centre at Alexandria, and games kick off at 1.30pm.

“We are definitely looking forward to the competition,” said Knight

“It’s a strong squad and the players who missed out made the final selections a very difficult process.”

“We have been fortunate with the draw but cannot take any game lightly and have set up two training games prior to the tournament to ensure that we are fully prepared.

“This is the first step in the campaign to the next FIFA Futsal World Cup,” concluded Knight.

The Futsalroos will depart for Bangkok tomorrow (Wednesday 16 October 2013) and will play two friendly matches against Bangkok FC (17 October) and Port Authority (18 October) to prepare for their opening Group B match against Timor Leste on Sunday 20 October (10:00am local, 2:00pm AEDT).

Round 1 v Dural Warriors – Review

Round 1 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League has been completed, and the Boomerangs have been able to secure more points from the round than their more highly fancied opponents, Dural Warriors.

Across the nine games battled out on Saturday 12 October at mpowerdome, Boomerangs won four and drew two allowing the Warriors wins only in the 12 and 14 girls and the youth men.

The day took on a special meaning for both Dural and Boomerangs as the inaugural Joma Australia Futsal Shield was announced to the players of the two clubs. With both clubs being supported by Joma in 2013/2014 they will compete for the Shield over the two NSW Premier League fixtures this season, with the winner being the club to accrue the most club championship points.

12 Boys
Boomerangs 6 – 2 Dural Warriors

With most of the boys having never experienced this level of competition before, the 12 boys team had little idea what to expect against Dural, whose 12 boys were a form side in the Premier League last year. The Boomerangs boys were a little slow to start but ended up taking a 3-2 lead into half time. The second half was one way traffic with the youngest of Boomerangs putting Dural to the sword scoring three unanswered goals to finish 6-2 winners – and at the same time giving their opposition little opportunity to score themselves. These boys certainly look the goods and the squad has come together nicely in pre-season and are showing a high level of skill – as individuals and as a team.

12 Girls
Boomerangs 0 – 8 Dural Warriors

A nightmare week leading in for the 12 girls with quite a few late withdrawals for this weekend’s game resulted in only five players for the match – none of whom were a recognised goalkeeper. The undermanned 12 girls were expectedly out gunned by an energetic and lively Dural team. The girls battled hard and held Dural at bay for most of the first half only conceding 1 goal in the first 17 minutes. The inevitable then happened with Dural’s fresh legs allowing them to get over the top of the Boomerangs – scoring four goals in each half.

14 Boys
Boomerangs 3 – 3 Dural Warriors

After struggling through all of last season with inconsistent results the 14 boys were looking to put in a strong performance against a talented Dural side. A tense first half was only split by a goal line scramble which was bundled in right on the half time whistle giving the Boomerangs a 1-0 half time advantage. The second half saw Dural quickly equalise only for the Boomerangs to then skip away to a 3-1 lead. Five minutes of sustained pressure late in the second half saw Dural peg the two goals back to leave the match drawn at 3-3. Although a draw was not a bad outcome against Dural, there is a sense that this was a game that the boys let slip away.

14 Girls
Boomerangs 1 – 9 Dural Warriors

The 14 Boomerangs girls were thoroughly outplayed by a slick Dural outfit, that showed individual and team skill, structure and discipline and will no doubt be a team near the top of the table by the end the season. It’s a shame these games aren’t all taped as the Dural performance would almost have been a ‘masterclass’ that other teams could have learnt from. On the Boomerangs side, the girls have a bit of work to do to get back up to speed and remain competitive in this competition.

16 Boys
Boomerangs 8 – 3 Dural Warriors

The Boomerangs 16 Boys were on fire from the starting whistle of this exciting, and at times, quite physical game. Three goals in the first five minutes by the Boomer Boys allowed them to take the lead going into the second half after a Dural come back in the last five minutes of the first stanza of play. However, the boys started the second half as they did the first, but this time, they did not allow the Dural boys back into the game and powered away to an 8-3 win. This Boomerangs team will be one to be feared by other teams across the league this season as they attempt to emulate the Grand Final winning ways of last season’s 16 Boys.

16 Girls
Boomerangs 2 – 2 Dural Warriors

As with the younger girls teams, the 16s were without a few of their key players for this match (two of whom were members of the 2013 Boomerangs F-League squad). A solid outing though saw the girls share the points with their opposition.

Both teams were mid table last year and battling for the final position in the top 4, results were split 50/50 setting this game up to be a thriller. A tense first half ended with Dural in the lead 0-1 scoring just before the break. the second half was one way traffic with Boomerangs dominating the play, and were justly rewarded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead. The match finished 2-2 with Dural scoring to equalise against the run of play.

Youth Men
Boomerangs 1 – 2 Dural Warriors

What a battle this match promised to be. Last year the Boomerangs 16s won the Grand Final and the Youth team finished fourth, a combination of these two teams surely bode well for Boomerangs. Dural were lead by Futsalroo young gun Wade Giovenali, and it was Dural that struck first with some fine passing followed by a cool finish taking a 1-0 lead into the break. A second half equaliser for Boomerangs gave the side hope, however it wasn’t to be with Dural running out 2-1 winners with a late strike.

Open Women

Boomerangs 3 – 1 Dural Warriors

The Boomerangs Open Women’s team, containing six of the well-performed 2013 F-League squad, took the floor to match up against an opponent they had defeated twice in the F-League season. Whilst a much closer match than the earlier F-League encounters, the Boomerangs women – after an even first half (1-1) – lifted their performance when needed to score the vital second goal, and put the icing on the cake with a penalty in the dying seconds. A solid hit out for the women, but they will need to improve to get the same results from some of the stronger teams in this year’s league.

Open Men
Boomerangs 3 – 1 Dural Warriors

A great win by the Boomerangs men, defeating a team they have never beaten in an FNSW Premier League match previously…  The following report is from Dan De Nardi of Football NSW…

Boomerangs bounce Dural
Boomerangs registered a superb 3-1 win over title holders Dural at Canberra’s mpowerdome on Saturday night to kickstart their summer quest in scintillating fashion.

Boomerangs were solid throughout and led Dural 2-1 at halftime before tightening the second-half screws to run out 3-1 victors – their first ever triumph over Dural.

Warriors opened the scoring in the eighth minute but Callum Smith responded with an off-balance thunderbolt to draw the home side level again. Grant Davoren popped up at the far post to push Boomerangs 2-1 in front at the interval and things got easier for the Territorians when key Dural player Greg Giovenali received his second yellow card with 10 minutes to go, a late Daniel Bennett goal sealing a terrific 3-1 win.

Boomerangs co-coach Kristian Collins was astounded. “It was definitely impressive as we don’t win too many rounds against Dural and we did very well across all the age groups,” he said.

“This is a massive morale booster for us going into the season but because Dural’s been dominant for so long every club has had to work hard to get up to their level, and that’s a good thing for Futsal in general.”

Dural coach Rob Varela gave credit to Boomerangs for their good showing and wondered where his team went on the night.
“They’re a good side and played well, we didn’t play well,” he said. “It’s hard to say what it was, maybe their minds were somewhere else, but we certainly didn’t deserve to win.”
“But it’s the first game of the season and if you are to lose one now’s the time for it. We know we need to play well in every game to get results.”

So with the nine games played, four wins, three losses and two draws, sees the Boomerangs take 14 points from a possible 27, and Dural only 11. A solid start to the 13/14 season and certainly something upon which a successful season can be built — and of course, an early lead taken in the battle for the Joma Australia Futsal Shield.
