MEN’S FUTSAL PREMIER LEAGUE: ROUND 8

The much-anticipated meeting between Canberra City Prawns and league leaders Boomerangs FS Blue ended all square in the Men’s Futsal Premier League Round 8. Despite forty minutes of unrelenting action neither team could find a winner in a terrific contest that ended all square at 2-2. Stephen Domenic bagged his tenth goal of the season for the Prawns and Ryan Keir also found the net, but a double from Michael Reeve earned Boomerangs Blue a share of the spoils and leaves them one point clear at the top of the table. The Prawns stay third, a further four points behind.

The Untouchables kept up their challenge for the top spot by defeating Monaro Panthers Grey 7-2 in an exciting encounter. Aidan Brown and Brett Forward both scored twice for the Untouchables who moved to within a point of the summit of the table. Further goals from Patryk Bylinski, Sam Kennard and Lachlan Riddell meant that the Panthers Grey response, from Oscar Ignetik and Angus Paterson, was to no avail.

Weston-Molonglo Timberwolves are within touching distance of the top of the table after they dismantled Monaro Panthers Green 8-3. Daniel Barac netted twice to move onto ten goals for the season and there was also a brace of goals from Tony Aleksovski and Bobby Jovanovic. Grant Davoren and Vinnie Brasil added to the total. Panthers Green did manage goals from Thomas James, Zach Knight and Dragan Stegnjaic but their cause wasn’t helped by the dismissal of goal-scorer Knight in the second half.

Later on in the evening the Panthers Green also suffered defeat at the hands of Boomerangs FS White, 4-2, for whom Travis Dries starred throughout ending the match with a hat-trick and a personal tally of eight goals for the campaign to date. For the second match in a row the Panthers Green ended up a man light as Nathan Walker was dismissed for receiving two yellow cards. Earlier James and Stegnjaic had scored for Panthers with Misko Naumoski adding the other Boomerangs goal.

CF ACT Premier League Update

The following from the Capital Football website.

MEN’S FPL: SIX-GOAL BENNETT INCREASES BOOMERANGS BLUE ADVANTAGE

MEN’S FUTSAL PREMIER LEAGUE: ROUND 5

Six goals from Daniel Bennett has put Boomerangs FS Blue clear at the top of the men’s Futsal Premier League after five rounds of the competition. Bennett, the league’s leading scorer, took his personal tally for the season to thirteen when burying a double hat-trick in the Boomerangs FS Blue’s 10-2 romp against Weston-Molonglo Timberwolves.

The Boomerangs team was in top form throughout the match with Bennett the willing beneficiary of the fine work of those behind him. Tom McLachlan found his way onto the score sheet for the fourth time this season whilst Jason O’Dwyer, Callum Smith and Glenn Smith also scored. Daniel Barac bagged his sixth of the campaign, before being sent off for two yellow card offences, with the Timberwolves other consolation credited as an own goal.

Canberra City Prawns slipped four points adrift of the leaders after they were held to a surprising 5-5 draw by Monaro Panthers Grey. The Monaro outfit registered their first point of the season in the draw and were seconds away from a remarkable win before a late, late Prawns equaliser earned the reigning champions a share of the spoils.

Stephen Domenici was the main goal-getter for the Prawns, slamming home a hat-trick to move onto seven goals for the year with Daniel Fulton and Ryan Keir also striking for the under-strength Prawns who fielded only five players on the match card. Panthers Grey was well worth their draw, and unlucky not to take a memorable win, with their goals coming from Josh Calabria (2), Oscar Ignetik, Angus Paterson and Regan Walsh.

A hat-trick from Brett Forward was the highlight of the Untouchables FC’s 5-2 win over Boomerangs FS White with his team moving up to second on the ladder and closing in on the league leaders having a game in hand. Forward was aided and abetted by strikes from Alex Csomor and Lachlan Riddell, the third of the season for the later. Boomerangs FS White replied through Travis Dries and Chris Lee but they didn’t have enough to down Untouchables.

RESULTS: ROUND 5

WOMEN’S FPL: SOMI HAT-TRICK SENDS EL DIVA TOP

WOMEN’S FUTSAL PREMIER LEAGUE: ROUND 5

Boomerangs FS El Diva moved to the top of the Women’s Futsal Premier League last week taking advantage of Monaro Panthers inactivity to slip above the previous leaders and continue their remarkable unbeaten start to the season which has seen them win five matches in a row to keep pace with the pre-season favourites.

The latest success was earned the hard way as Untouchables FC put up a real fight before falling 3-2 in a wonderfully entertaining match at the Australian National University courts. It took a hat-trick from Nicole Somi, who now has five goals for the season, to see of the Untouchables for whom goals from Najwa Allen and Olivia Gurney promised a tangible reward but, ultimately, were in vain.

Weston-Molonglo Pandas edged up the ladder into third place with their second win of the season as they defeated Belconnen United 4-3. The youngsters from Belconnen have pushed hard so far in 2014 and, despite losing all four matches to date, have been more than competitive in each. They were again here with Rhianna Goldstein scoring a brace for the Blue Devils, joining Emma Heaney on the score-sheet. But goals from Hope Wilkins (2), Karen Clarke and Erika Pennyfield gave the Pandas what could prove to be a vital three points.

Meanwhile, the Monaro Cubs showed their teeth as they ripped apart Tuggeranong United 12-4 on the back of a six-goal haul from Georgia Fogarty. Fogarty was in inspired form in front of goals on the evening, finding her touch early and adding goals at regular intervals. Hayley McLachlan nabbed a hat-trick and further efforts were recorded by Olivia Fogarty, Jacqueline Alferink and Lorena Barbaro. Kristy Helmers was defiant in defeat for Tuggeranong, claiming a treble with Sarah Daisley adding their fourth.

ACT Futsal Premier League Deciders

The Capital Football Futsal Premier League Grand Finals were held last night at the AIS. Following is the account of the matches by Capital Football.

We congratulate the winners in both the men’s and women’s competition – Canberra City Prawns and our very own Boomerangs women’s team – both teams totally dominating the season and remaining unbeaten throughout.

MEN’S FUTSAL PREMIER LEAGUE: GRAND FINAL
Wednesday 18th December
Canberra City Prawns 5 (Robbie Cattanach 13’, Pat Ross-Magee 22’, Daniel Fulton 29’ Stephen Domenici 33’, Trent Flanigan 36’) Canberra Olympic 0

Canberra City Prawns claimed the Men’s Futsal Premier League crown but were made to work extremely hard for it, defeating a tenacious Canberra Olympic 5-0 in the decider played at the AIS Training Hall. Indeed, it wasn’t until Olympic pushed to find a way back into the contest after conceding a solitary goal in the first half that the score-line blew out.

There was very little to choose between the two teams in what was an absorbing opening to the match with chances at a premium early on. The best of them in the first ten minutes went to the underdogs as Olympic tested Kieran Stroh to the full. Misko Naumoski was first to try his luck, played in by a sweet pass, but was denied by the legs of Stroh. Moments later Stroh needed to be at his alert best to deny Naumoski again before making the save of the half.

Olympic turned over the ball and broke quickly with Callum Smith freeing Michael Reeve who was left bearing down on goal. Stroh stood firm however and made a superb save to preserve parity for the league champions. That save appeared to spark the Prawns into action and Futsalroos international Angelo Konstantinou had to be alive to make a wonderful double save, denying Stephen Domenici and Robbie Cattanach in quick succession.

But Cattanach, the league’s leading scorer, wasn’t to be denied seven minutes from half-time as the Prawns took the lead. The build-up was simplicity itself, the Prawns creating an overlap on the right hand side and Cattanach did the rest, hammering a shot across the body of Konstantinou and into the far corner for his 30th goal of the season, to give the Prawns a narrow lead they took into half-time.

The Prawns wasted very little time in extending their lead in the second half, going 2-0 up within two minutes of the re-start. Olympic was the architects of their own downfall, turning over cheap possession on the edge of their own area and allowing Trent Flanigan to find Pat Ross-Magee who squeezed home the second. Trailing by two Olympic was forced to go on the front foot for the rest of the encounter and, subsequently, were left exposed on the break.

The Prawns, ruthless as they are, took advantage of the gaps on offer and Daniel Fulton put the game out of reach of their opponents with eleven minutes to play. Late goals from Stephen Domenici and Trent Flanigan, the latter imperious in the playmaking role once more, put added gloss on the scoreboard but it was well deserved by the stand-out team of the competition.

WOMEN’S FUTSAL PREMIER LEAGUE: GRAND FINAL
Wednesday 18th December
Boomerangs FS 5 (Ashleigh Palombi 4’, Becky Roche 10’, 13’, Brittany Palombi 19’, 35’) Belconnen United 0

Boomerangs FS rounded off their unbeaten season by claiming the Women’s Futsal Premier League title with a dominating performance as they saw off the challenge of Belconnen United 5-0 at the AIS Training Hall. In front of a healthy crowd, Boomerangs dominated the play from start to finish and rarely looked like losing the stranglehold they put on the match with a devastating opening spell.

The league champions and hot favourites started at a frantic pace and took the game to their younger opponents racking up a comfortable 4-0 score-line by the half-time break and effectively taking the game out of the reach of the Blue Devils. It took the Boomerangs just four minutes to take the lead as they scored off a quick counter. Becky Roche won possession in her own half and drove forward to lay a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Ashleigh Palombi who did the rest.

A brace of goals within a couple of minutes to the hard-working Roche, who enjoyed an outstanding match as a creator and destroyer, had the Boomerangs in cruise control before Brittany Palombi showed her skills, swapping the ball quickly from right to left to drill home a splendid fourth goal just before half-time, her 34th of a highly impressive season.

Belconnen started the second half in lively fashion and Brittany Smale forced Boomerangs goalkeeper Gill Raymond into a smart save moments after the resumption. And with the silky-skilled Nicole Jalocha coming more into the match, the Blue Devils started to have a greater share of possession as they chased an unlikely way back into the fixture.

The Boomerangs rode the Belconnen storm though and their experienced players began to dictate the tempo with Crittenden and Michelle Aurousseau remaining calm on the ball and eating up the seconds with a patient brand of Futsal. Despite leading by four, Boomerangs showed a resolute desire to keep a clean sheet, intercepting the sporadic Blue Devils attacks before they got within striking distance of Raymond in goal with efforts from distance Belconnen’s best chances.

But it was Boomerangs day and they rounded off an exceptional season with a fifth close to the end as Brittany Palombi squeezed a shot in at the near post to conclude the scoring and give Boomerangs the silverware.
