The first-ever Canberra derbies in the hummel F-League took place at the mPowerdome in Fadden on Friday evening as Boomerangs FS met Capital FC. As expected both matches were rip-roaring affairs full of action and incident. Here’s what happened.

WOMEN’S F-LEAGUE
Friday 4th July 2014

Boomerangs FS 2 (Doris Osman 6’, Nicole Somi 34’) Capital FC 6 (Nicole Jalocha 4’, 14’, Najwa Allen 19’, 23’, Natalie De Marco 23’, 37’)

Capital FC recorded their first-ever win with a stunning 6-2 upset of high-flying Boomerangs FS on Friday night to record an historic victory. The newly-formed side was superb in every aspect as they sauntered to a maiden success in the competition and drew first blood on derby night. It was the Capital FC underdogs that started the brighter and thoroughly deserved the lead they took in the 4th minute. Natalie De Marco created the chance with some silky skills which Nicole Jalocha finished off with aplomb. It was a short lived advantage as the Boomerangs responded almost immediately. The slick-passing of the favourites opened up the Capital FC defence leaving Doris Osman with the easiest of finishes. The game then turned into an end-to-end thriller with Capital FC re-taking the lead six minutes before the break. Again Jalocha was the one on the end of the move as a quick transition at pace allowed Jalocha to force the ball past Chloe Avgoustou in the Boomerangs goal. At the other end Capital FC custodian Tahlia Davidson kept her team’s lead intact with a stunning double save as Boomerangs came searching for the equaliser once again. And Capital FC was to profit as they went further ahead just before the break. Najwa Allen robbed Michaela Day of possession deep inside her own half and set off on a powerful run that culminated with a beautifully dinked finish over the advancing Avgoustou to put her side 3-1 ahead at the interval.

It was to get better for Capital FC after the resumption as they established a four goal cushion with a brace of goals within seconds of each other. De Marco netted the first lifting the ball expertly into the net after breaking clear in the 23rd minute before Allen made it five profiting from a defensive error to slot home her second of the match from a tight angle seconds after the kick-off. Nicole Somi pulled one back for the Boomerangs with six minutes to play but Capital FC made sure of victory with De Marco bagging her second late on.

MEN’S F-LEAGUE
Friday 4th July 2014

Boomerangs FS 6 (Michael Reeve 5’, 30’, Jonathan Ciminelli 16’, Callum Smith 18’, Thomas Zeitlhofer 29’, Jason O’Dwyer 34’) Capital FC 3 (Michael Rinaudo 12’, Brett Forward 21’, Sean O’Neill 27’)

Boomerangs FS reigned supreme in the men’s hummel F-League derby with a 6-3 success but was made to work all the way by a stubborn Capital FC team who are improving by the week and were unlucky not to get something from an exceptional match. As was expected the game was played at a furious pace with plenty of chances at both ends and some meaty tackles giving the match the derby feel that was anticipated before kick-off.

Capital FC goalkeeper Raymond Moon was the busier of the two stoppers in the opening exchanges denying both Robbie Cattanach and Callum Smith in quick succession with a brace of smart saves. But Moon could do little to prevent the Boomerangs taking the lead in the 5th minute as Michael Reeve picked his spot and arrowed a low drive beyond the reach of the Capital FC gloveman. Angelo Konstantinou was increasingly called into action as he game progressed making a super stop from Cameron Gordon before Capital FC levelled the ledger as Michael Rinaudo swept home at the end of a fast counter-attack. But it was Boomerangs who ended the half strongest netting twice in two minutes. Firstly, Jonathan Ciminelli robbed the last defender to advance on goal and finish calmly before another quick-fire break ended with Smith rounding the ‘keeper and steering home from an acute angle.

Capital FC needed a fast start to the second half and they got just that as they forced their way back into the match within seconds of the restart. Josh Calabria was the architect, skipping past a couple of challenges and drawing the ‘keeper to allow Brett Forward an easy tap-in. Shortly after the scores were levelled as Sean O’Neill wrong-footed Konstantinou to equalise but that seemed to reignite the Boomerangs who roared back into the lead with two goals within a minute through the lively Thomas Zeitlhofer and the effervescent Reeve. When Jason O’Dwyer thundered in goal number six with time running out, it sealed the result for the deserving Boomerangs.
