Round 12 v Rovers Review

Round 12 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League saw the Boomerangs away to Enfield Rovers at Riverwood.

The Round 5 clash between Boomerangs and Enfield at the AIS saw three wins and two draws to the Boomerangs. This was slightly improved in Round 12 splitting the result with the Rovers with four wins and a draw each. However six of the nine matches saw a 180 degree turn around in the results from the previous time these two clubs met (12B, 12G, 14B, YM, OW, OM). The 14 girls played out their second draw of the season with Enfield, but the 16 girls improved from a 2-2 draw to a 2-0 win. The Youth Men won 5-4, (compared with a 4-5 loss 7 rounds earlier) and the Open Men and Women both lost, compared with wins for both in Round 5. The form guide was well and truly thrown out the window!

12 Boys

Boomerangs 8-6 Rovers (Round 5, 2-8)

The 12 boys atoned for their big loss earlier in the season with a determined and strong showing against a competitor for the final spot in the top four. This loss now eliminates Enfield from the running, and sees the Boomerangs boys grab fourth spot, but still requires our boys to win at least one, and probably both of their final two games to remain in the top four and play finals this season.

12 Girls

Boomerangs 2 – 1 Rovers (Round 5, 2-8)

A vastly improved effort from the girls showing grit and determination running (with only one substitute). With their defence holding strong  in both the first and second halves they were able to knock in two nice goals to secure the win. The girls are now sixth on the ladder.

14 Boys

Boomerangs 0 – 5 Rovers (Round 5, 2-1)

This clash against one of the league leaders was always going to be a tough assignment. However the boys hung in there and matched it with the Rovers for most of the game, but the quality powerhouse of Enfield 14 boys brought it home strongly at the end. Enfield deservedly remains one of the favourites to take out the 14B title this season.

14 Girls

Boomerangs 0 – 0 Rovers (Round 5, 2-2)

The Boomerangs girls once again split the points with their Enfield rivals. Both teams remain winless at the bottom of the league, but have had two classic matches this season resulting in two draws. A great entertaining effort by the girls despite no goals being scored. The last few minutes of the match gave some hope that the Boomerang girls were about to crack the win, but alas, the ball just would not go in the back of the net!

16 Boys

Boomerangs 2 – 4 Rovers (Round 5, 0-2)

Two evenly matched teams went toe-to-toe for the full 40 minutes. However, like earlier this season, Enfield has shown they have the wood over the Boomerangs 16 boys and our lads struggled to seize the momentum. Down by two goals to match the defeat earlier in the season.

16 Girls

Boomerangs 2 – 0 Rovers (Round 5, 2-2)

Enfield 16 girls needed this win to maintain their quest for top spot on the ladder – however their dreams came crashing down when our girls played strongly throughout and denied the win. A great improvement from the 2-2 draw earlier in the season – including some solid work from several 14 girls playing up. Boomerangs 16 girls are now in sixth position on the ladder and could end up in a creditable fifth with solid outings across the remaining two rounds.

Youth Men

Boomerangs 5 – 4 Rovers (Round 5, 4-5)

Enfield and Boomerangs youth men continued their close rivalry with a single goal once again separating the two teams after 40 minutes. And for the second time this season it was the away team that came out on top. A great game with huge swings in momentum, and bunches of goals scored quickly by both teams. It’s a shame neither team will be playing finals this season.

Open Women

Boomerangs 0 – 6 Rovers (Round 5, 3-1)

The Boomerangs were never quite in this game, and a steady flow of goals by the Rovers women – combined with a solid defensive effort – ensured there was no way back for the Boomers. Enfield will certainly give the finals a good shake this year.

Open Men

Boomerangs 5 – 6 Rovers (Round 5, 7-4)

Enfield played a ‘spoiling’ brand of futsal and stopped the flow and passing of the usually fluent Boomerangs men. The game was not pretty to watch, as the many fouls and stoppages in play caused the match to be a real stop-start affair. For the second time this season, the Rovers men have used this tactic; and it worked on this occasion, allowing them to slow the game down and stop any forward momentum the Boomerangs were creating. A red card in the final few seconds (and a well taken free kick) was, at the end of the day, what decided this fixture. The win will not help Enfield in their finals aspirations, but now means the Boomerangs men will need ideally two from two in the final rounds of the season to ensure a second or third placed finish to avoid a semi-final against Dural.
