Round 11 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League saw the Boomerangs at home taking on the Campbelltown City Quake.
The Round 4 clash between Boomerangs and Quake at Minto saw the home team take home six wins and a draw from the nine available. What was quite noticeable about that round though was the closeness of matches, with many decided by only one or two goals. However, if we thought the last time the Boomerangs met Quake involved some close games, this Round 11 match up saw no less than six of the nine matches separated by a single goals (or less!). Across the nine matches, the Quake scored 28 goals to the Boomerangs 17, and came away with a massive seven wins and a single draw, losing only the Open Men’s to a determined Boomerangs Men’s outfit.
Competitive sport can be cruel, but this round with so many close games that fell on the side of Quake rather than Boomerangs was particularly difficult to bear. The seven to one (and a draw) result for the day was certainly not an accurate indicator of where the teams (and clubs) are at.
12 Boys
Boomerangs 2-5 Quake
The 12 boys fought bravely against the Quake 12s who proved their credentials at the top of the table. A quality end-to-end game that showed that the youngest of the Boomerangs boys teams were not far off the pace at all. The ability to put the ball in the back of the net gave the Quake boys the advantage, with the Boomer boys matching it all over the court. The boys have now slipped to one game outside the top four and will need good results from their final three games to make finals.
12 Girls
Boomerangs 2 – 3 Quake
An exciting arm wrestle between two very evenly matched teams sees the closest of results. This was a sensational effort from the 12 girls, who were up against a team that has only lost two matches this season. And this result was a vast improvement from their Round 4 clash where the Quake girls whipped up a frenzy scoring 12 goals to the Boomer girls 3. A great effort indicating just how far these girls have come in recent weeks.
14 Boys
Boomerangs 2 – 3 Quake
For the second time this season, these two teams could only be separated by a single goal in another tight and closely fought out game of futsal. After being down 1-2 at half time the boys lifted in the second half but could not breach Quake’s lead — with both teams scoring a solitary goal in the second half to leave the final score at 2-3.
14 Girls
Boomerangs 2 – 3 Quake
The Boomerangs girls lead 1-0 at half-time after really taking it to their opposition for the first 20 minutes. The Quake scored two lucky goals (fortunate rebounds/deflections) in the second half which put paid to the Boomer girls resurgence. With a little luck going their way, the 14s could have come away with a win after their great effort.
16 Boys
Boomerangs 2 – 5 Quake
A tough physical encounter for our 16 boys against the league leaders saw them go down 2-5. Three nil down at half time made it difficult for the boys, but they put in a much improved effort in the second half — with both teams scoring twice. Alas, the first half deficit meant another loss for this team which continues to have the potential to win more games than they lose!
16 Girls
Boomerangs 0 – 1 Quake
Once again a loss by the narrowest of margins in the 16 girls. 1-0 down at half time, the girls put in a huge effort in the second half, but neither team could penetrate each others’ goals and the half remained scoreless — and the final score remained 1-0.
Youth Men
Boomerangs 1 – 3 Quake
A 0-0 half time score provided a real opportunity for the Youth boys to contribute a win for the day. Unfortunately, Quake scored two early second half goals to the Boomerangs one and the Boomers lads were left chasing the game. The final five minutes saw the Boomerangs play ‘fifth man’, which almost produced a leveling goal, but alas, this was not to be, and the Quake scored in an open goal with seconds remaining on the clock.
Open Women
Boomerangs 3 – 3 Quake
Quake women were probably expecting an easy game today with this first versus last clash. However we saw an exciting and see-sawing battle where the Boomerangs women showed some of their early season form to really take on the mighty Quake team. The Boomerangs were on track to record an upset win, taking a 2-1 lead into half time, and playing high quality possession futsal in the second half. However a last gasp final 30 second goal from Quake leveled up the match and allowed them to take home a point from the game. A much improved performance from the Boomerangs Women.
Open Men
Boomerangs 3 – 2 Quake
Another high pressure intense match up between these two teams — and for the second time this season the Quake men really brought their A-Game to the Boomerangs and put in a massive effort. Fortunately though, the Boomerangs men were able to hold it together, maintain discipline and intensity, and bring home a win for the second time this season. Nil all at half time saw the pressure and intensity lifted to another level in the second half with a cracker of a goal scored by Grant Davoren followed by a double from Michael Reeve (keeping him well and truly in the mix for Golden Boot). Also worth mentioning was a high quality goal scored by Quake’s Futsalroo Dean Lockhart who has the knack of scoring goals at critical times in matches.
Before this weekend, the two team were equal on points occupying second and third position on the table. The result has seen the Boomerangs maintain their second place spot, but Quake have fallen to fourth with both Dural Warriors and Inner West Magic also securing Round 11 wins.
