Round three of the Football NSW Premier League 2 competition had the Boomerangs Club travel to Redfern to take on Sydney Futsal Club at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in the nine competitive age groups.

Development Squad Matches
The 11/12 girls and the 11 boys took on Sydney Futsal Club opposition at Endeavour Sports High in the afternoon and made a terrific account of themselves grabbing two solid wins from the matches played against the youngest Sydney Futsal squads.
Sydney Futsal does not have development academies, so the 9 boys and 10 boys headed over to Valentine Sports Park to gatecrash the PL1 fixture between hosted by Inner West Magic. The boys had matches against both Magic and UTS Northside. We thank those clubs for allowing the Boomers youngest boys teams to play some matches against strong PL1 club teams. Some mixed results for the boys, but a great contribution to their learning and development as futsal players. By the time they reach the competitive 12’s age group, they will be seasoned professionals!
On a sad note, Boomerangs teams wore black armbands during this round as a mark of respect for the tragic loss of a close family member of two of our youngest Boomerangs Academy boys. The club’s heartfelt thoughts go out to the extended Lo Pilato family during this most difficult time.
12 Boys: Boomerangs 2 – 4 Sydney Futsal (ht 1 – 2)
This week’s match was expected to be an evenly contested affair between two teams that had yet to register wins in their first two starts of the season. And it certainly panned out as expected – a really tight and competitive match, where it was probably the home court advantage that helped the home team. They started the stronger and took the early initiative, but the Boomers youngest competitive boy’s team worked their way back into the contest.
These boys continue to develop as a team – the individual skills are certainly there – and will no doubt secure competition points in the coming weeks.

13 Girls: Boomerangs 2 – 2 Sydney Futsal (ht 1 – 1)
Like the 12 boys, the 13 girls were also up against a team that had yet to register competition points in the first two rounds of the season. The match was very evenly contested, with an Ella Palfaman goal keeping them in the match at the break.
The second half saw a real arm wrestle, and a Reilly Yuen banger from 15 metres out looked to swing the momentum back the way of the travelling Boomers. Alas, the match ended a 2-2 draw and saw the competition points split. Both teams, now off the mark, but both no doubt preferring to have secured the three points as opposed to a single for the drawn match.

14 Boys: Boomerangs 2 – 5 Sydney Futsal (ht 2 – 4)
The 14 boys match again saw the Boomers off to a relatively slow start, allowing the home side to dominate possession and to a degree, court position. Defensive lapses and lack of security on the ball cost the travellers as the home side were very efficient and effective in their frontcourt. Terrific goals to Max Trushell and Nick Pratezina kept the boys in the match – and at the halftime break, the home side had a two-goal advantage.
The halftime team talk worked a treat as the Boomers tightened up their defences and looked far more controlled going forward. Alas, the home team could still register a goal whilst solidly defending their own net from Boomer’s forward forays. The lads will need to look to next round to secure competition points.

15 Girls: Boomerangs 4 – 2 Sydney Futsal (ht 2 – 1)
The 15 girls were keen to grab a win this round after starting the season with two heart-breaking draws on the road. The home team started the stronger and scored a goal within the first few minutes, holding that lead for most of the first 20. However, two goals in quick succession to Jade Brown and Tayla Hampson in the death throes of the first stanza, saw the Boomers 15s grab a critical single-goal lead at the break.
The girls took that confidence with them into the second period and were soon dominating possession and scoring opportunities. The tenacious captain, Teah Hayes, bustled her way through defenders on numerous occasions to score the two second-half goals to secure them a deserved two-goal victory.

16 Boys: Boomerangs 2 – 2 Sydney Futsal (ht 1 – 2)
The 16 boys were keen to build on their solid start to the season against a Sydney Futsal 16 boys that had notched up two wins from the first two rounds. The first half of the match was played at a frenetic pace between the evenly matched teams with the Boomers heading into the break with the narrowest of deficits by conceding a penalty in the dying minutes of the half.
The second half produced much of the same between these two evenly matched teams, with the Boomers rattling off more shots, but a top-shelf performance by the home team’s keeper kept them holding on to their narrow lead. A goal to Stef Vucic in the final few minutes made for a frantic finish to the match, which probably deservedly, finished all square between these teams.

18 Women: Boomerangs 5 – 1 Sydney Futsal (ht 2 – 1)
The 18 women’s match saw the travelling Boomerangs work hard, both on and off the ball, and convert opportunities when they presented themselves. Solid games from the entire roster and a spread of goal scorers, made it difficult for the home side to contain the visitors.
Maddie Perceval got the Boomers off to the best possible start with a goal inside the first 120 seconds., but it wasn’t until the final three minutes of the first half that Stella De Marco doubled the lead. The second half saw the Boomers ladies go from strength to strength, with an early goal to Steph Hedditch, as the tiring Sydney side struggled to convert their offensive build-up work. Consolation goals to Lucy D’Arcy (penalty) and Ellen Brown wrapped up a clinical performance by the Boomers 18s.

Youth Men: Boomerangs 1 – 2 Sydney Futsal (ht 0 – 0)
Heart-stopping performances are the hallmark of the Boomerangs Youth Men’s team – and this season (so far) and this team, have stuck to script with two single-goal wins in Rounds One and Two, and this – single goal loss in Round 3.
Atypically (for a youth men’s match), the first half showed control and pace-regulation by both teams as they looked for ways to outsmart their opposition. Both team coaches were probably not surprised, or indeed concerned, by the 0-0 half-time scoreline.
The second half saw the pace pick up a notch and the physicality increase. The away Boomers hit the scoreboard first through a penalty conversion by Nic Felizzi – his fourth goal in three matches this season. This sparked the match into life as the home side responded by picking up the pace. They were rewarded just three minutes later with a neatly worked goal. One could sense that further goals were in the offing, but alas, it was the home team that claimed the vital three points with a second, just three minutes from time.

Open Women: Boomerangs 6 – 1 Sydney Futsal (ht 3 – 0)
Boomerangs FS secured their first win (editor’s note: second win) in impressive fashion, beating Sydney Futsal Club 6-1 Saturday evening at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.
The visitors dominated from the opening whistle, Olivia Gurney, Ellen Brown and Alex McKenzie found the goals in the first half as Boomerangs clinical nature in front of goal impressed coach Nick Van Aalst. They continued their rampage in the second, as Madeleine Perceval, Ashlyn Garrity found the net with Gurney completed her brace as the ‘rangs shot into a four-way tie for first.
For Sydney Futsal Club, coming off their huge performance last weekend it was disappointing but there were flashes of brilliance, mostly from the boot of Hannah-Rose Davey and Madeleine Mirkovic. It was the former that crashed home Sydney’s goal of the contest.
Boomerangs were punished for their slow start last week, this week they conceded the first chance. Hannah-Rose Davey for Sydney Futsal Club turned well from her defender before she poked an effort right at the Boomerangs keeper.
From there, Olivia Gurney had a pair of chances to open the scoring for Boomerangs. Firstly, she was played well from a scoop pass but fired wide then repeated the dose, two minutes later as she drove through the defense but sprayed her effort.
Gurney would open the scoring in the 9th minute. An incisive move from Boomerangs created enough space for the attacker to slide home, for 1-nil.
Madeleine Mirkovic had a chance to return serve for Sydney Futsal Club when she snatched at a chance that landed right in the lap of the Boomerangs keeper.
Bar the odd chance, Boomerangs were in complete control. Gurney rode another challenge well before angling wide then Stella De Marco created an opening but her cutback fizzed across the goalmouth.
Alex Mckenzie made it 2-nil in the 19th minute. From a set piece, Mckenzie lined it up well, then smashed her effort into the top corner of the goal as the ‘rangs turned their dominance into goals.
Soon they added a third, Ellen Brown swooped in, snatching the ball from a defender before she bore down on goal then slotted it the bottom left corner to make it 3-nil just before half-time.
Ashlyn Garrity had a final chance in the first half, she rolled forward then forced a finger-tip save from the Sydney Futsal Club keeper as they took their three-goal lead into the break.
Coming straight from the break, Boomerangs added to their margin. Madeleine Perceval blasted an effort into the net just two minutes after the restart, making it 4-nil.
That goal brought the brightest period of action for Sydney Futsal Club. Firstly, Davey and Kim Cozens worked a free-kick routine well but Cozens poked the effort wide. Next, Mirkovic weaved past the defense but her final effort was blocked.
Davey did get reward for her effort in the 39th minute. The attacker popped up on the right then smashed an effort against the crossbar as it pinballed inside the goal, making it 4-1 headed into the final ten minutes.
As the game moved into the final minutes, Boomerangs added a pair of late goals to inflate the scoreline. Garrity finished off a well worked move for 5-1 then Gurney finished off the contest, smashing home her brace for the 6-1 final.
Afterwards Boomerangs coach, Nick Van Aalst praised the effort from his side, in their clinical nature tonight then said the three points will be a good stepping stone for their first home game next weekend at the AIS.

Open Men: Boomerangs 2 – 2 Sydney Futsal (ht 1 – 2)
Sydney Futsal Club grabbed their first points of the season, in a brave performance, holding off Boomerangs FS in a 2-2 draw tonight at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence.
The first points were earned the hard way, Sydney Futsal Club scored twice in the first half, both times through Nathan Spinola. The attacker arrowed home his first in the 7th minute then handed the home side’s lead in the 8th minute. Sydney spent most of the second half defending their own line but kept it intact mostly to move from the foot of the SELECT Futsal Premier League 2 ladder.
Boomerangs dominated much of the ball, and chances, Michael Rinaudo struck back from a well worked effort then Brad Sawyer volleyed home to make it 2-2 as the ‘rangs couldn’t find the winner late on.
Looking to find their first points of the season, Sydney Futsal Club had the worst possible start. Boomerangs worked the ball around well, prising an opening that Michael Rinaudo slipped home to make it 1-nil.
Whilst the visitors pressured well with the ball, creating angles for their chances although they were denied repeatedly by the Sydney keeper. Down the other end, the home side carved out their own chances.
First, Giovanni Leuzzi acrobatically tumbled an effort wide in the sixth minute. They also worked a slick movement for the opener a minute later. Nathan Spinola slotted home at the end of the move for 1-1.
Buoyed by their opener, Sydney Futsal Club doubled their dose. Once again, Spinola was the main pivot, found space on the wing, thrashed home an effort, for 2-1, and a shock lead for the home side.
Much of the first half settled into a pattern. Boomerangs sat on the front foot dominating the chances. Daniel Giovinazzo, Nicholas Rathjen and Glenn Smith had the majority of the chances but met a brick wall in Sydney keeper Laith Al-Shdifat who kept it at 2-1 headed into the break.
That pattern continued in the second half, as Boomerangs camped in the Sydney half. The best chance fell to Nicholas Dahl, he struck a fierce effort at Al-Shdifat, who dived to make the save. It looked like it might end up not being the ‘rangs day.
Sydney did have their own chances, Joshua Aruna cushioned an effort wide then a sprawling pass put Ryan Fletcher in space but he was denied by some rare action for Boomerangs keeper, Nick Van Aalst.
The equaliser came in the 37th minute. From a kick-in, Brad Sawyer broke into space before he volleyed an effort past Al-Shdifat, finally beaten, 2-2 with the taste for victory in their nostrils.
Rathjen had a golden chance, broke into space but couldn’t find the finish. Another free-kick almost created the Boomerangs winner, Giovinazzi sliced his set piece wide as the two sides settled for a point in an engrossing contest.
Afterwards the Sydney Futsal Club coach praised his sides effort in repelling a tough Boomerangs FS side and the youth players that stood up to secure their first points.
“I think what was good about the result, was the belief from the boys – in the structure when they lost the ball, keeping their shape. Also the four youth boys that backed up, were guided well by the men’s players.”
“They are a very patient side, and have been around for a few years. I thought we could’ve snatched a point but I told the boys they needed to stick to their structure.” he finished.
For Nick Van Aalst whilst it wasn’t the result he wanted, the positive signs were there for Boomerangs FS as they look to their first home fixtures next week.
“As soon as they got their second, they were happy to sit back and soak up the pressure. If we finished a few of our chances though, it could be a different story.”
“Last week might be an anolomy in that we were clinical with probably less shots than today. It is about being clinical, especially in transition. We took probably an extra touch today.” he finished.
