FNSW PL2 15/16 Round 5 Review

The fifth round of the 15/16 NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club travel to Mt Druitt in Sydney to take on the Town Rangers.

The nine competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys at 12.00pm and culminated with the Open Men kicking off at 7.30pm. A terrific effort across all age groups saw yet another strong performance from the club with six wins for the day – 18 points from a maximum of 27 available. (Photos of all nine matches can be found HERE)

12 Boys

Boomerangs FS 14- 2 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The 12 boys got the day off to the best of starts, peppering the opposition’s goal in the first half to record a 9-2 lead at half-time. A remarkable start to the game and to the day. By comparison the second half was far more restrained with the boys only scoring a further five, but importantly not conceding. Nine Boomerangs players registered on the scoresheet for the match.  The Mt Druitt youngest boy’s team were a little light on numbers, and look a bit light on confidence, having not yet registered a win this season.

(Goals: Odhran Traynor 4, Noah Dowling 2, Bailey Sorenson 2 – six single goal scorers)

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

13 Girls

Boomerangs FS 1- 4 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The 13 girls came up against a determined home team that looked keen to build on the strong start they have had to the season. The two teams appeared evenly matched, but the home team managed to find the back of the net more adeptly than the travelling young girls from Canberra. There was very little in the match at half-time with the home team leading by the slenderest of margins, but they managed to pressure the Boomerangs girls in the second half and score three more whilst conceding only once.

Without doubt these two teams are destined to meet in the season ending finals.

(Goals: Stella De Marco)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

14 Boys

Boomerangs FS 1- 4 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The 14 boys probably should have done better against this Mt Druitt team. The locals showed a level of skill and determination, but most of all they displayed patience to wait for the opportunities to score. Again there was little between these two teams, but the home team managed to find a way to goal, whereas the travelling Boomerangs had difficulty in getting the ball into the back of the net.

(Goals: Nico Coomber)

Competition Ladder Position: 4th

15 Girls

Boomerangs FS 3- 2 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The 15 girls looked calm. composed and in control of this match and went into the break 2-0 up. A third goal soon after the resumption may have caused some complacency amongst the girls as the Ranger lifted their work rate, and played themselves effectively back into the game. All the momentum was with the home team as the match clock ticked down, but the Boomers 15 girls were good enough to hold on to their slender lead.

(Goals: Alicia Meuronen 2, Isabella Tammaro)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

16 Boys

Boomerangs FS 0- 3 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The 16 boys find themselves at the bottom of the competition table after this loss to Mt Druitt.  Down 0-2 at half-time, the lads performed better in the second half, but could not penetrate the strong defence of the home team. An effective pathway to goal is still eluding this team, however their defensive efforts have definitely improved. The second half of the season will provide opportunity to convert some of this effort into wins.

Competition Ladder Position: 7th

17 Girls

Boomerangs FS 4- 1 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The 17 girls rarely looked troubled in this match as they confidently, and competently, built a 3-0 lead across the first twenty. The home team did claw one back, and many of the travelling supporters in the crowd were hoping that a home team resurgence would not come – as it did in the 15 girls match. The 17s lifted their efforts and effectively snuffed out any momentum the Town Rangers were building to see out a highly competent 4-1 victory. The girls remain clear at the top of the competition ladder – and with a significant goal difference advantage.

(Goals: Grace Basser-Silk 3, Alex Martens)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Youth Men

Boomerangs FS 5- 2 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The Boomerangs Youth had a tough battle on their hands – especially in the first half after the Rangers scored early. A penalty kick near the end of the first stanza saw the lads level it up. The second half saw the strong Boomerangs Youth lift into another gear as the home team were tiring. Some terrific team play and displayed skills led to a second half dominance (4-1) that saw the visitors run out comfortable victors.

This win takes the Youth to the top of the ladder – however they have played an additional game to second placed Raiders, who they take on next weekend.

(Goals: Grant Barlow, Nick Rathjen, Chris Kazolis, Jono Ciminelli, Ben Basser-Silk)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Open Women

Boomerangs FS 5- 1 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The Boomerangs Open Women’s team maintained their dominance over the PL2 competition with this effortless win over second place Mt Druitt. The ladies once again looked in total control and are performing strongly in all aspects of their game.

The women started the game in top form and knocked in three unanswered goals in the first twenty. The second half saw them control the tempo of the game in an effort to tighten their defence and maintain their lead, which they did by scoring a further two goals, while conceding only one. Some terrific form being shown right across the court by all players.

(Goals: Olivia Gurney 3, Najwa Allen 2)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Open Men

Boomerangs FS 3- 2 Mt Druitt Town Rangers

The men’s team maintained their top-of-the-table position by competently defeating top four aspirants, Mt Druitt. Whilst the game never looked like being a high margin win, in the end the Boomerangs senior men did the job they needed to do in winning this match effectively. They have now won four of their five matches by a single goal but show a steely resolve and confidence in their ability to get the job done each and every week.

The game never reached great heights, and after taking a 2-1 lead into the half time break, the players were effective in controlling possession and match tempo. Another fine performance by Jason O’Dwyer with the youth players playing their second match of the day also being highly effective in supporting the travelling men.

(Goals: Jason O’Dwyer 2, Brett Forward)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

The Club holds on to their twenty eight point lead in the club championship table ahead of Raiders Futsal who travel down to Canberra next week for the clash of the round (Raiders have already had their bye). Only the Boomerangs and Sydney City Eagles are yet to have their byes in the first half of the season.
