Round 10 of the 15/16 NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club take on the Botany Bay Pirates for the return clash at mPowerdome. In Round 3 the club recorded its first ever shutout against another club in the FNSW State/Premier futsal leagues. That day against Botany Bay Pirates, on their home courts in Hurstville, provided impetus for the club to continue its strong progress across the 15/16 season.
For Botany Bay to visit Canberra’s mPowerdome would then have been a daunting prospect after going winless at home. And on top of that was the timing of the round, just one week before Christmas, and in the heat of an early Canberra summer.
As it was, the trip to the nation’s capital did indeed prove difficult for the Sydney club – as they struggled to bring down maximum size squads to give them deep benches – something that was definitely going to be needed on a day that was forecast to hit 38 degrees.
The results of the nine competitive matches were again brilliant for the Boomers, producing a second ‘shutout’ for the season, with nine victories recorded from the nine competitive matches. The record books would need to be dug deeply into to find another club in the NSW elite futsal leagues that have completed two shut outs in a season.

12 Boys
Boomerangs FS 8 – 0 Botany Bay Pirates
The day started with a 12 boy’s match that was, for a change, not one that held the spectators (and coaching staff) on the edge of their seats. The boys looked good from the off and although the first half scoring result didn’t reflect the overall dominance (2-0), the boys certainly found the back of the net in the second period – taking out the match 8-0.
A strong dominant second half set the trend for the remaining matches played this Saturday at mPowerdome.
(Goals: Sam Godwin-Wiseman 3, Seb Woods 3, Odhran Traynor, Jak Matic)
Competition Ladder Position: 2nd
13 Girls
Boomerangs FS 10 – 0 Botany Bay Pirates
When these teams met in Round 3, the Boomers youngest girls put on a bit of a clinic and thrashed their rivals 12-0. It was no surprise then that they started this match with a great deal of confidence – but not over confidence – as they worked hard to keep a clean sheet and to score six in the first half and a further four in the second. It was certainly more of a competitive match than the round three fixture, but the Boomers 13s showed their class and skills by scoring the goals they needed (with Lilli Thomas showing great skills to net four), whilst being solid at the defensive end.
(Goals: Lilli Thomas 4, Lily Martens 2, Stella De Marco, Cec Matic, Ellen Brown, Lucy D’Arcy)
Competition Ladder Position: 1st
14 Boys
Boomerangs FS 6 – 1 Botany Bay Pirates
The 14 boys knew they had to earn their victory against their travelling opposition, and to do it without relying on one avenue to goal (in Round 3, Barbatano netted five). The boys built into this game well and showed their dominance in the first half, scoring four of their six in that period. The second half saw them build on this lead, and whilst they scored only two, they kept a clean sheet for the second stanza – a great effort against a solid Pirates team.
And as is always desirable, the goals were spread around with five individual goal-scorers registering.
(Goals: Zac Barbatano 2, Ollie McCarthy, Luca Gagliardi, Stefan Vucic, Nico Coomber)
Competition Ladder Position: 5th
15 Girls
Boomerangs FS 5 – 3 Botany Bay Pirates
The Boomers 15 girls had to dig deep in this match against the sixth placed Pirates team. The first half was a close and even affair with the visitors having the better accuracy netting three to the home team’s two. It would require a special effort and a lift in intensity for the 15 girls to take this match. And that’s exactly what they did – they lifted intensity, worked harder at the defensive end, and produced some fine goals at the offensive end to take out the match 5-3.
(Goals: Alicia Meuronen 2, Isabella Tamarao 2, Sonia Pasquariello)
Competition Ladder Position: 2nd
16 Boys
Boomerangs FS 7 – 4 Botany Bay Pirates
The Round 3 match when these two teams met in Hurstville, was the first win for the season for the Boomerangs 16 boys. Since then, they have further improved their results to sit just outside the top four. Like the 15 girls, the 16 boys found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-2 scoreline after the first twenty – and similarly, they lifted their work rate and intensity in the second half to score five goals whilst conceding but a single.
A huge effort and one that is rewarded with a climb by one place on the competition ladder – to fourth. These lads have some tough games coming up in the final four weeks of competition they need to negotiate before they can be confident of playing finals futsal.
(Goals: John O’Gorman 2, David O’Gorman 2, Harry Williams, Jack Williams, Zac Barbatano,)
Competition Ladder Position: 4th
17 Girls
Boomerangs FS 7 – 2 Botany Bay Pirates
The 17 girls continued their strong run of form with this match against the Pirates, and unlike the day’s two previous matches, the girls headed into the half-time break with a lead. The three unanswered first half goals were built on with a further four in the second half – whilst conceding two.
The girls remain undefeated this season with the only blemishes two draws – against Phoenix and Sydney City Eagles – two teams that sit outside the top four. The girls will be looking for victory in their final three matches of the regular season.
(Goals: Alex Martens 2, Isobel D’Amico 2, Ineke Voigt, Rachel Corbett, Hayley McLachlan)
Competition Ladder Position: 1st
Youth Men
Boomerangs FS 7 – 2 Botany Bay Pirates
The Boomerangs Youth dealt with their Pirates opposition much as they did the first time these two teams met. They were clinical and dominant in their 7-2 victory, building on a slightly undisciplined first half to power home in the second where they scored five goals unanswered. Sometimes it seems these lads play better from behind, or out of adversity!
(Goals: Jono Ciminelli 3, Chris Smith, Grant Barlow, Michael Rinaudo, Ben Basser-Silk)
Competition Ladder Position: 2nd
Open Women
Boomerangs FS 5 – 0 Botany Bay Pirates
The Boomerangs Open Women’s team were awarded a walk over win when the Botany Bay Pirates advised that they would be unable to field a team and would be forfeiting the match.
An easy three points for the ladies, but a good work out to earn the three points would have been more desirable. Regardless, they remain atop the competition ladder going into the break, with their fine record intact.
Competition Ladder Position: 1st
Open Men
Boomerangs FS 9 – 1 Botany Bay Pirates
The Boomerangs Men had no trouble in overcoming their travelling opposition. They started strongly, knocking in three early goals and going into the break with a four – one lead. The second half saw them net a further five goals unanswered to take out a match in which they were rarely troubled.
Man of the Match, Daniel Giovinazzo, had a blinder and knocked in four goals off his own boot and played an important role in several others. The team stays in third place on the ladder, and will remain there unless they can win their final three matches of the season, against Phoenix, Mt Druitt and table toppers Raiders Futsal.
(Goals: Daniel Giovinazzo 4, Brett Forward 2, Jason O’Dwyer, Jake Wilsener, Jono Ciminelli)
Competition Ladder Position: 3rd
After this Round Ten, the Boomerang’s lead in the club championship has increased to fourteen points – with Raiders Futsal also having a good day out at Mt Druitt taking eight wins from the nine matches.
The next round of matches for Boomerangs teams is in the New Year, and away at Ryde to Phoenix Futsal.
