FNSW PL2 15/16 Round 10 Review

Round 10 of the 15/16 NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club take on the Botany Bay Pirates for the return clash at mPowerdome. In Round 3 the club recorded its first ever shutout against another club in the FNSW State/Premier futsal leagues. That day against Botany Bay Pirates, on their home courts in Hurstville, provided impetus for the club to continue its strong progress across the 15/16 season.

For Botany Bay to visit Canberra’s mPowerdome would then have been a daunting prospect after going winless at home. And on top of that was the timing of the round, just one week before Christmas, and in the heat of an early Canberra summer.

As it was, the trip to the nation’s capital did indeed prove difficult for the Sydney club – as they struggled to bring down maximum size squads to give them deep benches – something that was definitely going to be needed on a day that was forecast to hit 38 degrees.

The results of the nine competitive matches were again brilliant for the Boomers, producing a second ‘shutout’ for the season, with nine victories recorded from the nine competitive matches. The record books would need to be dug deeply into to find another club in the NSW elite futsal leagues that have completed two shut outs in a season.

FNSW PL2 15/16 Round 8 Review

Round 8 of the 15/16 NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club at home at mPowerdome taking on the strong Hakoah Club from Sydney. In Round 1, when the Boomerangs travelled up to Alexandria to take on Hakoah for the first time in season 15/16, the club returned back down the Hume Highway with five wins and four losses – considered a reasonable return for a Round 1 away match against a traditionally tough club. For this home round, the club was looking for a minimum of six wins from the day against the club sitting third on the Club Championship table.

After an 11 boys development squad game where the Hakoah juniors once again taught the locals a few futsal lessons, the competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys and produced a sensational, edge-of-the-seat game resulting in a drawn match. From there, the day only got better for the Boomers club at home with positive results in the remaining eight matches.

FNSW PL2 Mid-Season Review

The Football NSW Premier League 2 competition is now halfway through the season and it is timely to look at where each of the Boomerangs nine competitive teams sit.

For the club as a whole, the Boomerangs lead the Club Championship after seven rounds on 112 points, a slim four points ahead of Raiders Futsal. Hakoah sit in third place on 90 points with Mt Druitt and Sydney City in the mid 70s. Phoenix and Botany Bay Pirates will likely battle for the wooden spoon and potential relegation.

At the top end of the table the Boomerangs have put together 36 wins, 14 losses and 4 draws from their 54 matches contested, whilst Raiders have a 35/16/3 record. The top placed team in PL2 at season end will be promoted to the PL1 competition – so there is plenty to play for across the final seven rounds.

Additionally, all nine teams are still in contention to play in the finals – with a top four finish needed to participate.

The aim for the club is simple: to have a better second half of the season than the first and to improve the lead at the top of the table.

12 Boys

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

The 12 boys sit in second place on the competition ladder after seven rounds have been played for season 15/16. The strong Hakoah team sit on top with a perfect six from six record, with the Boomerangs youngest boys just the one loss (to Hakoah) behind on 15 competition points.

The boys need to replicate their first half season form across the second – starting with a win against Hakoah this coming weekend to take top spot.

Across the competition Seb Woods leads all scorers with 14 goals so far this season. Odhran Traynor has eight, and Noah Dowling scrapes into the top ten on seven goals.

13 Girls

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

The 13 girls are in second place at the halfway point of the season. Five wins and a loss see them equal on points with top-placed Phoenix, however the Phoenix girls have a massive goal-difference advantage of 30 goals (compared with Boomers 14).

The girls have a real opportunity to take six from six across the second half of the season and to secure top spot going into finals.

Cec Matic leads Boomers scoring for the first half of the season with seven goals (fourth in the competition), Stella De Marco with five goals and Lily Martens with four also in the top ten competition goal scorers.

14 Boys

Competition Ladder Position: 5th

The 14 boys sit in fifth position after seven rounds, just four points adrift of the top four having won two matches and lost four this season to date.

A finals spot is definitely up for grabs if the boys put together a stronger second half of the season and lift to win matches against those teams that sit above them on the table.

Zac Barbatano holds second spot in the competition goal scoring with ten goals from his five games played.

15 Girls

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

The 15 girls sit in second position on four wins, one draw, one loss  five points behind Raiders Futsal.

The loss was to the strong Raiders team and the draw to the Eagles. This talented team definitely has the potential to win all their remaining games in a strong surge home.

Alicia Meuronen leads all-scorers for the competition with seven goals from the five games she has played this season in 15 girls.

16 Boys

Competition Ladder Position: 7th

This 16 boys prop up the bottom of the ladder with a single win and five losses to date this season. The boys have been able to score freely but have conceded far too many goals across all games in the first half of the season (33).

This team can still make finals as they are only four points away from third position on the ladder (Raiders and Hakoah dominate the competition holding the top two positions comfortably). It will take a super effort but the lads have been developing all season and are looking to put together more wins than losses over the second half of the season.

Zac Barbatano leads Boomerangs goal scoring with five goals for the 16 boys (eighth highest in the league).

17 Girls

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

The 17 girls remain in the number one spot on the table at the mid point of the season, a solitary point ahead of Hakoah – with both these teams two games or more clear of the rest. The 17 girls have the best attacking record – as well as the best defensive record – in the league giving them a 19 goal, goal-difference, streets ahead of the next best at 5.

Alex Martens and Grace Basser Silk jointly hold second spot in the competition goal scoring with six each, with Amelia Turner also in the top ten (8th) with four.

Youth Men

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

The Boomerangs Youth sit atop the competition table after seven rounds with four wins, a draw and a loss. They have scored 23 and conceded just 13 (goal difference of 10) giving them the best defensive record of the Youth competition.

The lads are looking to go one better than their 14/15 State League season and become Minor Premiers, as well as Grand Final winners.

Jono Ciminelli, Grant Barlow (4 each) and Amed Ugool, Michael Rinaudo, Nick Rathjen (3) all sit in the top ten scorers for the season to date.

Open Women

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

The Boomerangs Open Women’s team remain in top spot on the competition ladder (16 points) after seven rounds having won five matches and drawn one. This team have scored an amazing 30 goals in the season to date, and conceded a paltry five.

Mt Druitt are in second position on 12 points, Raiders and Hakoah rounding out the top four on 10 points.

Unsurprisingly, the Boomerangs Open Women have four players in the top ten scorers for the season to date including Olivia Gurney topping the list with 6 goals, closely followed by Najwa Allen on five, Nat De Marco on four and Hayley McLachlan on three.

Open Men

Competition Ladder Position: 3rd

The Boomerangs Open Men sit on 15 points (with a goal difference of 4) – equal with both Raiders Futsal (goal difference 12) and Sydney City Eagles (goal difference 11). In fourth place is Hakoah on 7 points. Very little has split the top three teams across the front end of the season.

The men have the equal best defensive record in the competition, but have not managed to keep up with the high scoring Raiders and Eagles, winning many of their games by a solitary goal.

This team has the ability to power home in the second half of the season and take the title.

Brett Forward sits in third position on the goal scoring table with five goals, with Daniel Giovinazzo on equal seventh with four goals.

As the season kicks into its second half, with each age group looking to consolidate and build on their first half efforts, the aim for each age group is to finish as high in the top four as possible and to play finals futsal at the end of season 15/16. Each team is also cognisant of its contribution to the Club Championship table, and the goal of the club to once again be promoted to the top futsal league in NSW – and arguably the top futsal competition (for all ages) in Australia.

It all starts this coming weekend with a home round against Eastern Suburbs Hakoah.

Look forward to seeing as many players, family, friends and spectators as possible at M-Powerdome supporting the Boomerangs on their quest to rejoin the Premier League 1 competition!

FNSW PL2 15/16 Round 6 Review

The sixth round of the 15/16 NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club home at mPowerdome taking on the strong Raiders Futsal Club in a critical round for both of these clubs vying for top spot on the Club Championship table.

The nine competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys at 12.30pm and culminated with the Open Men kicking off at 7.10pm. The club started the day with an expectation of collecting more competition points from the day than the opposition – allowing it to enter next weekend’s bye round with an unassailable lead.

(Match day photos can be found HERE)

12 Boys

Boomerangs FS 7 – 6 Raiders Futsal

The 12 boys started their match well, and with a level of confidence that matched their recent form. They took a 3-2 lead into the half-time break and it appeared they were on their way to a comfortable lead. Raiders though had other thoughts, and after being down by several goals, clawed their way back into the match to level it up with only a few minutes to play. James Stoddart scored for the youngest Boomer boys in the dying seconds of the match to take the points in an edge of your seat thriller.

An exciting start to the day’s proceedings.

(Goals: Seb Woods 3, Noah Dowling, Ethan Barac, James Stoddart, Ordhan Traynor)

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

13 Girls

Boomerangs FS 3 – 2 Raiders Futsal

The 13 girls took a 1-1 scoreline into half time against a Raiders team that had only won one game this season to date. The players and the coaching staff knew that a better performance was required in the second half, and they did indeed lift – but with due credit to a hard working Raider girls team, they pushed the ladder leading Boomerangs all the way. A 3-2 victory to the youngest Boomers girls was far closer than it should have been.

(Goals: Stella De Marco, Cec Matic, Lucy D’Arcy)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

14 Boys

Boomerangs FS 3 – 6 Raiders Futsal

The 14 boys started their match against the Raiders strongly and looked composed and structured during the first 20 minutes. They went into the half-time break up 3-2. In a classic ‘game of two halves’ the Raiders boys picked up the work rate and seized the momentum to knock in four unanswered second half goals.

This loss now sees the boys slip to fifth position on the competition ladder and in danger of missing out on finals.

(Goals: Luca Gagliardi, Zac Barbatano, Robert Tkatchenko)

Competition Ladder Position: 5th

15 Girls

Boomerangs FS 0 – 2 Raiders Futsal

The 15 girls found themselves up against a tough opposition that was unbeaten across the five competition rounds prior. Down 0-1 at half-time the Boomers 15 girls tried hard to work themselves back into the game, but to no effect. A further second half Raiders goal put paid to the effort and the Boomerangs girls lose their first match of the season.

And with this win, the Raiders 15 girls take the Boomerangs top spot on the competition ladder.

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

16 Boys

Boomerangs FS 4 – 6 Raiders Futsal

This 16 boys match showed a great deal of structure, patience and discipline – unlike a lot of 16 boys games! The lads worked strongly in the first half and went into the break all tied up with their opponents at one goal a piece. The game opened up somewhat in the second half and it was the travelling Raiders that took greatest advantage of the extra space and time the courts at mPowerdome allow.

A reasonable effort from the Boomerangs lads considering they were up against the previously undefeated Raiders. This game was far closer than a first v last place match would suggest.

(Goals: Zac Barbatano, Harry Williams, Mas Piccirillo, Connor Falusi)

Competition Ladder Position: 7th

17 Girls

Boomerangs FS 4 – 1 Raiders Futsal

The 17 girls looked relatively comfortable during this match against a solid opposition. A 3-0 half-time lead was converted to a 4-1 victory – which was a tremendous effort considering the team was missing four of its regular starters due to interstate football commitments.

The girls maintain their top of the table ladder position and continue to build their premiership credentials.

(Goals: Amelia Turner 2, Ivana Galic, Grace Basser-Silk)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Youth Men

Boomerangs FS 2 – 2 Raiders Futsal

The Boomerangs Youth were pushed all the way by this energetic and keen opposition. The lads looked to slowly take control of the match and the half-time score of 2-1 in favour of the Boomers was reflective of the match.  As has been the case this season, the youth men looked to power away with the match in the second half, however a slew of missed opportunities in front of goal meant that a second half goal by the Raiders brought the match back to level – which is where it stayed, despite the best efforts of the Boomers Youth.

The lads retain their top of the ladder position, but may lose it during the bye next week, should Raiders overcome Botany Bay.

(Goals: Jono Ciminelli, Michael Rinaudo)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Open Women

Boomerangs FS 2 – 2 Raiders Futsal

The Boomerangs Open Women’s team again looked comfortable in the early stages of this match and the two first half goals saw them enter the break in a strong psoition. However, like most of the Raiders teams this match day, they showed great strength and poise well into the second half and stepped up their defence, and produced more opportunities in the front half.

This draw sees the Boomerangs Women drop their first points for the season, however they maintain their top spot on the ladder – with a degree of comfort (seven competition points and a massive relative goal advantage).

(Goals: Najwa Allen, Jackie Alferink)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Open Men

Boomerangs FS 1 – 5 Raiders Futsal

In recent seasons the men’s team hasn’t matched up at all well with this strong Raiders team. The first half saw an even balance of possession and a resultant 1-1 scoreline — a cracking long range goal from their ‘keeper levelling the scores before the half. A further goal by the Raiders then saw the Boomerangs throw everything forward in an effort to bridge the gap, however the momentum – and goal scoring – remained with the Raiders and they came away with a deserved 5-1 victory.

The Boomers Men maintain their #1 position on the ladder, however may drop to third over the bye weekend should results go as form predicts. A bit of work for the boys to do to get back to their peak form.

(Goals: Brad Sawyer)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

The Boomerang’s lead in the club championship has slipped to 25 points – ahead of Raiders Futsal – who have an opportunity to take the lead next weekend against Botany Bay Pirates while the Boomerangs have a bye weekend.

The next round of matches for Boomerangs teams is at home on December 5 against Eastern Suburbs Hakoah.

FNSW PL2 15/16 Round 4 Review

The fourth round of the 15/16 NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club at home taking on Phoenix Futsal – a club recently demoted from the FNSW top Premier League competition.

The U11 boys development squad took on Phoenix as a precursor to the days’ competitive matches and came out resounding winners, scoring freely and conceding only a few. Yet another fantastic performance from this group of boys.

The nine competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys at 12.30pm and culminated with the Open Men kicking off at 7.10pm. A determined effort across all age groups saw yet another terrific performance from the club with seven wins, one draw and a solitary loss – 22 points from a maximum of 27 available.

12 Boys

Boomerangs FS 7- 3 Phoenix Futsal

The 12 boys led this match 2-0 at half-time after the Phoenix boys played well across the court in the first twenty. The Boomers pushed their lead out to 4 goals early in the second half but a determined Phoenix team didn’t go down without a fight, pulling the score back to 4-2. Eventually our boys pulled away putting 3 more in the back of the Phoenix net to run out 7-3 winners. A good spread of goal scorers, but the lads could have tightened up their defence at the back end of the game.

(Goals: Noah Dowling, Seb Woods, Odhran Traynor 2, Jack Matic 1)

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

13 Girls

Boomerangs FS 4- 2 Phoenix Futsal

The 13 girls went up 2 goals early but Phoenix showed their class and strength to ensure the teams entered the half-time break all square at two goals a piece. The youngest Boomer girls lifted their work rate on and off the ball and put together some slick futsal to score two – and importantly not concede – across the final 20 minutes of the match. An important win for the girls against a classy opposition that they will meet again in finals this season.

(Goals: Stella De Marco, Lily Martens, Cec Matic, Elissa Youill)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

14 Boys

Boomerangs FS 7- 1 Phoenix Futsal

The 14 boys, spurred on by their first win last week, controlled this match from the kick off and went into the half-time break with a reasonably comfortable 3-0 lead. A strong second half, building on the first half efforts, saw them net another four whilst conceding only one. A good defensive display from the boys saw them to an impressive win, pushing themselves in the frame for a top four finish.

(Goals: Zac Barbatano 3, Stefan Vucic 2, Luca Gagliardi, Nico Coomber)

Competition Ladder Position: 3rd

15 Girls

Boomerangs FS 3- 2 Phoenix Futsal

The 15 girls had trouble keeping pace with the Phoenix 15s during the first half and conceded twice whilst being unable to bother the scorer themselves, not for lack of chances. One goal changed the game for our girls, who pushed on, eventually tying the game up before scoring a winner late on into the game. The 3-0 second half performance saw much improved finishing to beat a stubborn Phoenix team.

(Goals: Maddy Perceval 2, Alicia Meuronen)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

16 Boys

Boomerangs FS 3- 5 Phoenix Futsal

The 16 boys struggled to get rhythm early in the first half of this game and found themselves down 2-1, before a 3rd Phoenix goal seconds before the break. The lads consolidated early in the second half, but Phoenix didn’t let up, with late goals to both teams seeing the score run up to 3-5, and Phoenix holding on in the end.

(Goals: John O’Gorman, Zac Barbatano, Connor Falusi)

Competition Ladder Position: 6th

17 Girls

Boomerangs FS 2- 2 Phoenix Futsal

Like the 15s, the 17s girls were a little slow out of the blocks in the first half and struggled to get out of first gear. The half-time break gave them time to re assess (their two goal deficit) and take stock and they went into the second stanza with more energy and desire to score goals. Their effort across the court lifted, and they did not concede a second half goal whilst scoring two crackers themselves. They had a significant amount of shots in the second half, but the Phoenix were saved on many occasions by the upright and crossbar as well as some good goalkeeping. Whilst not bringing home the three competition points, the girls know they have the measure of this Phoenix team.

(Goals: Alex Martens, Amelia Turner)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Youth Men

Boomerangs FS 2- 1 Phoenix Futsal

In a scrappy affair that never soared to great heights, the Boomers lads struggled to gain any fluidity and momentum in this match. Both teams lacked creativity early on, but a Phoenix bomb silenced the crowd, spurring the Boomers into action. The Boomers missed several chances throughout the half, only to score with less than a minute on the clock to even the scoreline 1-1 at half-time.

The second half was much like the first, but the lads managed to knock in a back post goal to take a single goal advantage which they protected till the final whistle, surviving some late Phoenix pressure in the process. Three points, but a bit to work on for the lads before their next outing.

(Goals: Michael Rinaudo, Chris Smith)

Competition Ladder Position: 2nd

Open Women

Boomerangs FS 6- 0 Phoenix Futsal

The Boomerangs open age women’s team brushed aside Phoenix much like they have all comers this season. This team is certainly running hot and its hard to see how they can not continue on the way they have to date for the remainder of the season.

A single goal advantage at half-time was pushed out to six with the addition of five top class second half goal and a superb defensive effort to keep a clean sheet.

(Goals: Olivia Gurney 3, Nat De Marco, Amelia Turner, Hayley McLachlan)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Open Men

Boomerangs FS 4- 3 Phoenix Futsal

The men’s game was fast and furious – as they mostly are – and the Boomers made the best start, netting with their first touches of the game. Phoenix rallied and managed to take a lead into the break at 3-2, our lads perhaps feeling unlucky to not be leading.

The second half was a more tightly fought affair with Phoenix happy to sit on their lead and play some counter attacking futsal. The Boomers men came out in the second half determined to make up the shortfall and take a lead and they soon levelled the game up at 3-3. However, it took until the final throes of the match for Brett Forward to knock in a winner for the Boomerangs senior men’s team. A scrappy win, that was probably made harder than it should have been.

(Goals: Daniel Giovinazzo 2, Jake Wilsener, Brett Forward)

Competition Ladder Position: 1st

Remarkably, after four rounds of the 15/16 competition, ALL Boomerangs female teams remain undefeated, with the only blemish a draw by the 15s and a draw by the 17s. Both the 13 Girls and Open Women have won all four of their matches to date.

And the strong second half performances continue. Three matches this round were come from behind wins, and two were wins after being tied up at half-time. Three wins were banked from a strong second half building on a slight half-time advantage.

From the male side of the Club, only the Open Men sit in top place on the competition ladder, with both the 12 Boys and Youth Men in second place. The 14s and 16s have a little work to do to climb to the pinnacle. All Boomerangs women’s/girls teams lead their competition table— from the 13 girls through to the Open Women, the Boomerangs dominate. A great effort by all concerned!

The Club remains atop the club championship table twenty eight points ahead of Raiders Futsal who had the bye this weekend. Only the Boomerangs, Eagles and Phoenix are yet to have their byes in the first half of the season.

Next week, Round 5 next weekend sees the club away taking on Mt Druitt Town Rangers in what should be a tough round of highly competitive matches.

FNSW PL2 15/16 Round 2 Review

The second round of the NSW Premier League 2 season saw the club host the Sydney City Eagles at mPowerdome for the first home matches for the 15/16 season.

Sydney City did not bring down an U11 development squad, so the youngest Boomerangs played a scratch match dividing the squad into two teams. Some terrific skills were on display, and it is promising to see so many 11, 10 and 9 year olds developing their futsal skills to a high level. Our 12 boys should benefit over coming seasons.

The nine competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys and culminated with the Open Men. Sydney City are traditionally a tough opponent and have a strong competitive streak that provides stiff opposition across all age groups – especially their men’s teams.

It was a pleasing result then for the day to end with six wins, a draw and only two losses from the nine competitive matches. Six wins a round (from the nine matches played) is where the club wants to be, so it is pleasing that this has been achieved for the first two weekends of competition.

12 Boys

Boomerangs FS 4 – 2 Sydney City Eagles

The 12 boys found themselves in a tough close match in the first half but more than matched it with the Eagles, going into the break at two goals a piece. The second half saw the young Boomerangs slowly build some ascendancy and take the lead with a third, and then cap off the match with a fourth. The pleasing result saw a clean sheet in the second half. A great start to the day.

13 Girls

Boomerangs FS 2 – 1 Sydney City Eagles

Like the 12 boys, the youngest Boomerangs girls team also found themselves in a tough competition against their Sydney opposition. Half-time saw the teams at one goal a piece, but once again, the Boomers lifted their work rate, and managed to score a single second half goal whilst not conceding. Two from two to start the day – the perfect start.

14 Boys

Boomerangs FS 5 – 9 Sydney City Eagles

Down 5-2 at half-time, the boys were keen to come out in the second half a work their way back into the match. And they certainly did play a better, more controlled style of futsal in the second half – however whilst scoring three themselves, they could not stop the flow of goals at their defensive end. Some work needs to be done by these lads to stop conceding goals so freely.

15 Girls

Boomerangs FS 2 – 2 Sydney City Eagles

After being level 1-1 at half-time, the Boomerangs dominated the second half in the 15 girls, and should really have won this encounter. Whilst the first half saw honours evenly shared, the second half saw a more determined Boomerangs 15s take to the court. They couldn’t however, convert their intent into goals, and had to be satisfied with the single competition point for the draw.

16 Boys

Boomerangs FS 3 –  7 Sydney City Eagles

The 16 boys were once again outplayed in the early stages of this match by a faster, more aggressive style of futsal. Many in this team are new to this level of competition, and it has taken a little while for them to adjust to the increased level of intensity and physicality. On the positive side, whilst they conceded 6 goals in the first half, they lifted their work rate to win the second half 2-1.  The two teams they have come up against so far, have also been highly skilled and disciplined and will likely feature in end of season finals – it is now for these Boomers lads to string together some wins in coming weeks.

17 Girls

Boomerangs FS 7 – 2 Sydney City Eagles

The 17 girls were never really tested in this encounter with Sydney City. Five goals to one in the first half saw them comfortably head into the break, and confidently tackle the second period knowing they had the measure of their opposition. The final score of 7-2 probably reflective of the difference between these teams.

Youth Men

Boomerangs FS 5 – 1 Sydney City Eagles

The Youth Men have had a long time rivalry with the Sydney City Eagles Youth and this match was predicted to be a hotly contested affair. And hotly contested it certainly was; however it was the Boomerangs, on the back of some tremendous individual performances, that slotted home four unanswered goals in the second half after going into the break at 1-1. The lads looked in top form and as individuals have started to gain some form, and they have also started clicking as a team. They now have form and confidence to take them through the rest of the season.

Open Women

Boomerangs FS 6 – 0 Sydney City Eagles

Another terrific performance by the Boomerangs open age women’s team. The senior ladies team was not bothered throughout this match by their opposition and comfortably led at both half-time (3-0), and when the final whistle blew. The Boomerangs women top the competition ladder with a 100% record and a nine goal, goal differential after only two matches.

Open Men

Boomerangs FS 3 – 2 Sydney City Eagles

The men, once again saw themselves pitted against another strong, determined and physical opponent. Five goals scored in the first half saw the Boomers take the single goal lead into the second half. The second half saw no more goals added, but did see an increase in intensity and physicality as the match racked up eight yellow cards (four each team) amongst numerous fouls.

A solid win against yet another team that should do well this season, sees the Boomerangs men at two from two for the season so far.

The female Boomers teams remain undefeated after two rounds with seven wins and a draw and the male teams performed much better this second round.

Photos of this round of matches can be found HERE

At this early stage in the season, the Club sits in second place on the club championship table behind Raiders Futsal.

Next week, Round 3 sees the club’s ten teams travel Hurstville to take on the Botany Bay Pirates – coming off an early season bye this past weekend (a team that had four wins and five losses against Sydney City Eagles in Round 1).

Running the Boomerangs is a big undertaking relying heavily on volunteers drawn from its players and player’s families. If you are in position to help as a team manager, volunteer or match day official, please let us know as soon as possible.

Any further queries regarding the season can be addressed to Kristian or Jenney (for club-wide queries), or to the team Coach (and Manager when finalised).

F-League Round 8 Review

Round Eight of the 2015 national F-League competition was played out over the weekend (26/27/28 June) with home matches for both the Boomerangs men and women against Sydney teams, East Coast Heat and Dural Warriors.

The four matches provided high quality futsal and some close and tight tussles; however, the results once again did not go the way of the Boomers teams.

F-League Round 7 Review

Round Seven of the 2015 national F-League competition was played out over the weekend of 19/20/21 June with home matches for both the Boomerangs men and women against the strong Inner West Magic club from Sydney.

The two matches provided a great deal of entertainment and high quality futsal — however the men were on the receiving end of a switched on and well-drilled Magic men. The women though, somewhat atoned for their poor performance two weeks ago in the away match up against the Magic when they forced a draw (their third for the season) from the match, coming from behind late in the game.

F-League Round 3 Review

Round Three of the 2015 F-League competition was played out over the weekend of 24/25 May with home matches for both the Boomerangs men and women against the travelling Queensland teams, South Brisbane and Galaxy FC (Gold Coast).

It was a beautiful autumn afternoon in the capital, and with the sun shining, quite pleasant outdoors and indeed inside the mPowerdome. However as the afternoon sun gave way to the evening chill, the air became distinctly icy, making both the players and spectators shiver through the three matches.

WOMEN

South Brisbane

The Women’s game was sandwiched between the two men’s matches and kicked off at 6pm, after the South Brisbane team drove across town from their earlier comfortable defeat of Capital FC.

In what was always going to be a close match – these two teams have rarely been separated by more than a goal or two – both teams brought their A-Games to the Boomerangs home court.

The match started not with a bang, but with control and discipline, as each team attempted to gain strategic advantage. The scoreboard opened after a goalless first nine minutes with South Brisbane knocking one home after a dominant period of play. It took little time though for the Boomer ladies to respond with Olivia Gurney smashing home from a rebound not two minutes later levelling it up at a goal a piece.

With three minutes remaining in the first half, the Queenslanders slotted home a second after the Boomerangs lost possession in the defensive third. Again the Boomerangs clawed it back almost immediately with a stellar goal by Nat De Marco which took the teams into the half-time break all squared up 2-2.

The second half commenced similarly to the first, with neither team looking to press goal-ward with any level of intensity, rather seeking to gain possession and momentum advantage. Some great work by goalkeepers at both ends allowed the scorer to remain idle.

Indeed it took until fifteen minutes into the second stanza for the arm wrestle to be broken with Becky Roche scoring from an Alex Marten assist. Boomerangs 3-2 South Brisbane with just five minutes to play.

However the lead did not take long to be cancelled out – as it had all game – with South Brisbane converting a free kick to bring it back square with just four minutes to play.

Both teams pressed for the winner, but neither could convert, leaving the match all tied at 3-3 as the final whistle blew.

MEN

South Brisbane

The first of the two men’s matches – against the South Brisbane team – kicked off at 4.15pm to open up the day’s proceedings at the mPowerdome. It took until nine minutes into the game for the Boomerangs to register their first score with a smashing shot by Grant Barlow – his second goal in just his second F-League match. In no time at all though, South Brisbane countered effectively to tie it up 1-1.

The Boomerangs coaching staff were forced to call a time-out as South Brisbane scored a second with seven and a half left in the first half.

On almost the very next offensive play the South Brisbane team had a player red carded for an infringement on Boomerangs first half goal keeper, Zac Sorenson. As hard as they tried though, the Boomers failed to convert the one man on-field advantage into scoreboard advantage in the following two minute period. However, not five seconds had elapsed after South Brisbane regained their full quota of on-field personnel, when a Cal Smith bomb smashed into the back of the net to tie it up two all.

The Boomers conceded another through an unfortunate own goal with just three minutes to play of the first half, ensuring the Queenslanders went into the half-time break a goal to the good.

The first eight minutes of the second half saw the Boomerangs pepper the South Brisbane goal for no return….  on the counter South Brisbane were busy throwing their best efforts at the Boomer’s defence. It took until eight minutes into the second stanza for a goal to come – and it was a cracker with Cal Smith taking matters into his own hands and slotting one home after beating most of the defenders along the way. Boomerangs 3-3 South Brisbane.

With five minutes remaining on the clock, the Boomerangs coaching staff called a much needed timeout after what had become a very physical period of play, resulting in several players being heavily knocked to the floor, including Smith, Ciminelli and second half keeper van Aalst.

Soon after the resumption, and for the second time in the match, Cal Smith took it upon himself to beat the whole South Brisbane team and smash home his third to make it a single goal lead with two and a half minutes to play.

Smith registered his fourth for the match from the ten metre penalty spot as South Brisbane incurred their sixth team foul of the physical second half. Ben Basser-Silk put a full stop on the game with just two seconds to play to wrap up a solid, and hard fought win over the courageous South Brisbane team.

Galaxy FC

The second match of the day for the Boomerangs men was at 7.45pm, immediately after the women’s match and less than two hours after they finished their tough physical game against South Brisbane. From the earlier game, Jono Ciminelli sustained an ankle injury which prevented him backing up. Also worse for wear, but still able to take the court, were Michael Reeve and Cal Smith.

The lads though started the match in fine form, hitting their straps immediately and grabbing the early lead against the jet-lagged Galaxy boys. It took just four minutes of game time for Ben Basser-Silk to knock one past the Galaxy keeper from a killer Cal Smith assist.

Michael Reeve added to the scoreline not a minute later with a cracker of an individual goal – with the pleasure showing after not being able to register on the score sheet in the earlier match. Boomerangs 2-0 Galaxy with less than six minutes played, and seemingly on their way to another victory.

However, the Galaxy men grabbed one back with some nice passing and movement catching the Boomerangs defence out. 2-1 to the Boomers with eight minutes gone in the match. Two minutes later, the Galaxy add a second to tie the match up, which is where it remained when the half-time buzzer sounded. The Boomerangs looking to tire in the latter part of the first half, and the Galaxy boys starting to pick up their rhythm and flow.

The end of the half-time break couldn’t come quick enough for the players as the temperature started to drop to near freezing. Some five minutes into the second half and Galaxy, clearly thawing out more quickly, score a third – once again as some terrific passing and movement off the ball split the Boomers defence wide open. For a team in their first season of the top flight of futsal in Australia, the Galaxy lads play a high quality, slick brand of futsal.

No further goals and a time out called with five minutes to play; and the Boomerangs men decide to play fly-keeper in an endeavour to claw back the deficit. The Galaxy defense handled the extra Boomerangs field player effectively despite constant forward half pressure by the home team for the majority of the final five minutes.

With 42 seconds left in the match the Galaxy scored into an unprotected goal after intercepting a Boomerangs pass. Down by two, the Boomers lads threw everything into the final three quarters of a minute and managed to secure a ten metre penalty with only a few seconds left on the clock – which they failed to convert.

As the final whistle ended the game, it was Galaxy the victors in their first ever F-League trip to the capital 4-2 over the Boomerangs.

Men’s

The traveling Vic Vipers did the seemingly impossible and won all three matches on their Sydney road trip, stamping their favouritism on the 2015 race for the title. Bayside Pirates did less well, losing all three on their trip north of the Murray, and conceding 31 goals in the process. As a result, the three Sydney teams all split their weekend games with a win and a loss each.

The Queensland travelling teams both split their ACT Road trips, but in reverse fashion — and Capital FC, like the Boomerangs also split the weekend.

Women’s

The Vic Vipers ladies lost all three of their Sydney games putting a dampener on their good season start. South Brisbane had an unbeaten road trip, defeating Capital FC and drawing with the Boomerangs women.
