FNSW PL2 17/18 Season Review

Season 17/18 for the Boomerangs FS club in the FNSW PL2 competition was a highly successful one, enjoyable and with some fantastic futsal being played along the way. And whilst falling a bit short of expectations (of gaining promotion to PL1), the playing and coaching group improved significantly and gained a whole lot of confidence, especially with results at the back end of the season and through the finals campaign for the competitive age groups. Watch out PL2 in 18/19!

DEVELOPMENT SQUADS
10 Boys / 11 Boys / 11/12 Girls
The youngest Boomerangs teams, the ‘Baby Boomers’ once again developed their skills, both individually and as teams, and learnt more about what it takes to play in a high-level futsal competition. The match experience gained in playing some strong Sydney teams, as well as the raft of local ACT-based games that they also competed in, helped to build these groups of kids as players and ultimately to prepare them for playing in the competitive age groups. Of course, many of them did play up in those age groups, both boys and girls — some as young as 10 years old —  and they played with distinction, never letting the team down and contributing by playing their role, listening to the coach and helping their teammates.

*Note that the MVP awards were voted by the players themselves and the coaches award based on criteria the coach thought most valuable.  Continue reading “FNSW PL2 17/18 Season Review”

FNSW PL2 17/18 Presentation Night

March 3, 2018, saw the Boomerangs family gather at the Yowani Country Club to celebrate the season just passed and to recognise the raft of tremendous performances across the FNSW PL2 competition in all age groups.

Over 230 players, parents, families, sponsors and supporters joined in the celebrations on the night.

Each team – from the development squads to the open age women and men – were awarded two trophies, one for the Coaches Player and the second, MVP, as voted for by their peers. In addition, a range of whole-of-club awards were awarded to those who achieved above and beyond for season 17/18.

Photos of the night can be found at the Boomerangs FS photo site.

Congratulations to the following award winners. Continue reading “FNSW PL2 17/18 Presentation Night”

FNSW PL2 17/18 Grand Finals

Week 3 of the FNSW PL2 17/18 finals series saw the remaining four of the nine competitive Boomerangs teams play in the Grand Final for the right to be named Champions of the 17/18 season.

It was a  terrific day at Valentine Park with Grand Finals for all age groups from 12 boys through to Open Men’s and including the AWD Grand Final.  The Boomerangs club was represented in four of the nine matches (excl AWD), equal best representation with Raiders futsal – and indeed were set to battle it out with Raiders in three of those four Grand Finals.

15 Girls: Boomerangs 2 – 0 Raiders Futsal (ht 1 – 0)
After the loss to Raiders in the qualifying semi-final, the 15 girls were hurting. They were keen to go through the season undefeated, and the loss in the semi-final put a dint in that goal. They were as determined as any team to make amends and to win the match that really did matter – the Grand Final.

Coach Mark Dowling always has a plan for each match Continue reading “FNSW PL2 17/18 Grand Finals”

FNSW PL2 17/18 Finals Series Week 2

Week 2 of the FNSW PL2 17/18 finals series saw five of the nine competitive Boomerangs teams play in elimination qualifying finals. Week one of finals saw one team drop out of contention for Grand Final glory, and week two a second, leaving four teams booking their place in Grand Finals on 24 February.

It was a  terrific day of results, with four hard-fought wins and just the one loss, with the three remaining female teams going through to the ultimate match of 2017/2018 and the youth men’s team joining them as the sole male representative from Boomerangs FS.

15 Girls: Boomerangs 4 – 1 Hakoah (ht 2 – 1)
The 15 girls were back to their dominating best in this do or die match against Hakoah; even though it took some time for them to register their first goal of the match. Hakoah opened the scoring halfway through the first period via a rare free kick to beat goalkeeper Sally James, usually a 100% stopper of set pieces, after the Boomers had looked to be the stronger team in the opening period. The goal by Hakoah Continue reading “FNSW PL2 17/18 Finals Series Week 2”

FNSW PL2 17/18 Finals Series Week 1

Week 1 of the FNSW PL2 17/18 finals series saw five of the nine competitive Boomerangs teams play in either qualifying (1v2) or elimination (3v4) semi-finals.

It was a disappointing day of results, with four losses and just the one win, but only resulting in one team being eliminated from the finals race. The male teams fared better with both the youth men and the open men progressing. The female teams did not do so well with losses in all three qualifying finals; the 15 and 18 girls and the Open Women. Fortunately, those teams have a double chance and will need to win next weekend to get to play in the Grand Final.

14 Boys: Boomerangs 3 – 5 Raiders Futsal (ht 1 – 4)
The 14 boys, finishing fourth in the regular season, came up against third-placed Raiders Futsal in the first of two elimination finals for Boomerangs teams on this day one of the finals series. Continue reading “FNSW PL2 17/18 Finals Series Week 1”

FNSW PL2 R14 Wrap

Round 14 – the final regular season round of the 17/18 Premier League 2 season – was played at home against the Mt Druitt Town Rangers. Mt Druitt has had a relatively poor season, and in the corresponding round in the first half of the season, the Boomerangs club disappointingly came home with only five wins, a loss and three frustrating draws. The aim for this round was to better those results and to lock as many teams as possible into finals (noting that a couple were also relying on other results). Teams not in finals contention were also looking to finish off the season with a solid performance.

To check out the photos of this round head to the Boomerangs photo site.

Development Squad Matches
The travelling Town Rangers were without development squad teams, so the Boomerangs 10 boys played the 11/12 girls – which is always a cracker of a match, closely fought and intense. The 11 boys played a match against a Gungahlin team. We thank Gungahlin FC for the support they have given the Boomerangs this season by making their young teams available to play our development squads when visiting teams did not bring their squads with them (or they had no under-age development programs).

12 Boys: Boomerangs 1 – 6 Mt Druitt Town Rangers (ht 0 – 4)
The 12 boys match was Continue reading “FNSW PL2 R14 Wrap”

Round 13 of the 17/18 Premier League 2 season – the second last of the season – was played away in Alexandria, Sydney against the Club Championship leading Eastern Suburbs Hakoah.

To check out the photos of this round head to the Boomerangs photo site.

Development Squad Matches
There were two development squad matches played against Hakoah which mixed up the players somewhat. The 10 boys joined the 11/12 girls to play against the Hakoah 11/12 girls and the 11 boys played against their Hakoah equivalents.

12 Boys: Boomerangs 0 – 9 Hakoah (ht 0 – 4)
The 12 boys were Continue reading “FNSW PL2 R13 Wrap”

Round 12 of the 17/18 Premier League 2 season was at home, played in the air-conditioned comfort of the AIS sports halls against a club sitting second in the Club Championship for the season, Raiders Futsal.

To check out the photos of this round head to the Boomerangs photo site.

Development Squad Matches
There were two development squad matches played as a precursor to the competitive matches against Raiders. The first was an intra-cub match between the 10 development boys and the 11/12 development girls followed by the 11 boys playing in a terrifically competitive match against local side Gungahlin.

12 Boys: Boomerangs 1 – 0 Raiders (ht 0 – 0)
The 12 boys were up against Continue reading “FNSW PL2 R12 Wrap”

Round eleven of the 17/18 Premier League 2 season was away at the Hornsby PCYC taking on the Phoenix Futsal Club.

To check out the photos of this round head to the Boomerangs photo site.

Development Squad Matches
There were two development squad matches played against Phoenix prior to the competitive matches – the 11/12 girls and the 10/11 boys. Both games were highly entertaining and of good quality – and it is apparent that these young Boomers are developing well as the season progresses. The girls dominated their match – especially in the second half, with the Phoenix boys putting up a strong effort against the travelling Boomerangs youngsters.

12 Boys: Boomerangs 2 – 1 Phoenix (ht 1 – 1)
The 12 boys were up against a Phoenix team that has struggled this season,  but still had some quality players hitting the court.  The boys were first to score and managed to hold that lead till around halfway through the first period. One all at the break and the match was there for the taking by both teams.  The second half was Continue reading “FNSW PL2 R11 Wrap”
