FNSW 18/19 PL2 R5 Wrap

Round 5 of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition had the Boomerangs club on the road again, this time to the home of Southern Districts (SD) Raiders at the Fairfield Youth and Leisure Centre. SD Raiders are relatively new to the FNSW PL futsal competition and were promoted from last season’s State League to compete this year in PL2. As the two clubs had never previously met in any age group, it was difficult to predict the outcomes of these matches.

Development Squad Matches
The club arranged a match for the 9/10 boys against UTS Northside at Dee Why. A group of enthusiastic players, driven by dedicated parents and coached by Ollie McCarthy and Parsa Tabatabaei, drove the extra hour or so to take on UTS. The boys reportedly played very solidly against a tough and unwielding UTS boys side, and accounted for themselves well.

The 11 boys and 11/12 girls started the day’s action at Fairfield on small courts against local SD Raiders opposition. Both matches were fast, and exciting, with the boys conceding a few more than they scored, and the girls accounting for themselves very well scoring some terrific goals and defending well. Both teams played well in stages, but need to put together complete forty minute games so as not to provide an opportunity for the opposition to so freely score goals!

FNSW Futsal Cup Round of 16

The 2018 FNSW Futsal Cup draw had both Boomerangs senior men’s and women’s teams scheduled to take on Raiders Futsal in the Round of 16 on 23 October 2018.

Raiders v Boomerangs FS Women
The women’s match kicked off proceedings at 7 pm with a close to full-strength women’s team heading up the Hume Highway late Tuesday afternoon. After their weekend league result (9-1 victory) over Sydney City Eagles fresh on their mind, the ladies were chock-full of confidence. The earlier clash between Boomerangs and Raiders in Round 1 of the PL2 competition saw the Boomerangs prevail 3-1.

The Raiders though thought nothing of the form guide and hit the court full of vigour and determination. The match was evenly-poised a minute from half-time at one goal apiece, however, two quick goals before the break swung the momentum back in Raiders favour.

The second half saw a Continue reading “FNSW Futsal Cup Round of 16”

Round four of the 18/19 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition had the Boomerangs club at home for the first time this season, hosting stalwart FNSW PL club Sydney City Eagles. It was terrific to be playing at the AIS once again and certainly nice to not have to travel up the highway after the three consecutive away rounds to kick off the season.

Development Squad Matches
The 10 and 11 boys took on Sydney City Eagles 11 boys team in two matches preceding the competitive matches of the day. The 11 boys matched up well with the Eagles and put together some sparkling play, giving some hint as to their future capabilities. The 10 boys found it a bit tougher, but again showed many positive signs against a tough (and older) opposition.

The Eagles club does not have an 11/12 girls development team, so the early match of the day had the Boomers 11/12 girls take on the 9 boys, in what was mostly a one-sided affair with the bigger and stronger girls dominating for long periods.

Round three of the Football NSW Premier League 2 competition had the Boomerangs Club travel to Redfern to take on Sydney Futsal Club at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in the nine competitive age groups.

Development Squad Matches
The 11/12 girls and the 11 boys took on Sydney Futsal Club opposition at Endeavour Sports High in the afternoon and made a terrific account of themselves grabbing two solid wins from the matches played against the youngest Sydney Futsal squads.

Sydney Futsal does not have development academies, so the 9 boys and 10 boys headed over to Valentine Sports Park to gatecrash the PL1 fixture between hosted by Inner West Magic. The boys had matches against both Magic and UTS Northside. We thank those clubs for allowing the Boomers youngest boys teams to play some matches against strong PL1 club teams. Some mixed results for the boys, but a great contribution to their learning and development as futsal players. By the time they reach the competitive 12’s age group, they will be seasoned professionals! Continue reading “FNSW 18/19 PL2 R3 Wrap”

Round two of the Football NSW Premier League 2 competition had the Boomerangs Club travel to Wollongong to take on the South Coast Taipans at the University of Wollongong.

A Wollongong away trip always seems a lot closer than the Sydney sojourns, and the glimpses of ocean and beach add value to the weekend – especially for those players and families that combine this away trip with a short weekend break.

Futsal rounds at the Taipan’s home at the University of Wollongong are always hotly contested and fairly even affairs and this trip proved to be no different, with the Taipans winning more of the day’s matches, but the Boomers coming home with more Club Championship points (calculated on seven age groups, 14 boys and older).

Development Squad Matches
The Taipans have a great junior development program and it was terrific for our Academy/Development teams to be able to play some really competitive matches against the youngest from the Wollongong region. The matches were, on the whole, fairly evenly contested with only a few one-sided games amongst them. Importantly, the games gave the youngest players and their coaches more opportunities to develop as individual players and as teams – and early in the season, this is already starting to show.

It’s also always good to see the juniors hang around for a while after their matches to support the older age groups compete – they learn by listening and doing, but also by observing the skills, passing, positional plays and teamwork of the older age groups.

FNSW 18/19 PL2 R1 Wrap

After several months of preparation, the club started it’s FNSW PL2 season with an away trip to the south west of Sydney to take on Raiders Futsal, a club which finished second on the Club Championship ladder last season. Raiders Futsal always provides strong teams across all age groups and matches are often closely fought with increasing intensity as the age groups progress.

Development Squad Matches
As Raiders Futsal have no younger age boys teams below 11s, the Boomerangs 9 and 10 boys ended up travelling to Windsor to have a series of matches against the Mountain Majik club. The 11 boys and the 11/12 girls had early matches against Raiders Futsal opposition and acquited themselves very well. The 11/12 girls probably had the edge over their Raiders Futsal counterparts, who were a few players short of a full squad.  The 11 boys were involved in a cracker of a match against Raiders with the two evenly-matched sides exchanging goals between periods of solid defence. All the 11 boys played well – with several of them rewarded with a bench spot with the 12 boys.

Higher honours for Darwich

Boomerangs FS youth and men’s player, Elie Darwich has been selected for the Lebanon national U20s squad in preparation for the  Asian Football Confederation (AFC) U20 Futsal Championships in early 2019.

Elie is heading off to Lebanon on Monday 9 July and whilst there will play in the Alfa National Futsal League with the U20s squad as preparation for the AFC Championships.

The AFC U20 Futsal Championships was first contested in 2017 with Lebanon coming a respectable second in their pool (W3/D1/L0) and losing their quarter-final to eventual winners, Iran.

We wish Elie all the best with the opportunities his national representative duties in Lebanon provide – but his presence will be missed around the club as a player, coach, role model and club member during the upcoming FNSW PL2 season. (We do look forward to benefitting from his skills development though!) Continue reading “Higher honours for Darwich”

Barbatano makes men’s NPL debut

A significant milestone for another Boomers family member

On top of the terrific news in recent months of three Boomerang’s men’s players (Fulton, Rathjen, van Aalst) being selected to play international futsal at the AFF Futsal Club Championship (and nearly winning the tournament), and Boomers favourite, Elie Darwich being selected for the Lebanon U20 Youth men’s team to play in the AFC U20 Championships early in 2019 (and at the same time playing in the Lebanon National League), another of the Boomerangs growing family takes a massive step to a successful sporting career.

At the tender age of 15, Zac Barbatano has made his debut in the Gungahlin men’s NPL team.

“He’s extremely creative and fast thinking, has great feet and is capable of winning matches by himself, he makes the difference”, Gungahlin NPL men’s coach Marcel Munoz is quoted as saying. Zac may have been blessed with natural sporting ability, but his years of playing high-level futsal with the Boomerangs has certainly helped him to become the player he is today.
