Round 6 of the 2013/2014 Football NSW Futsal Premier League was an away round to Ryde up against the Phoenix Futsal Club.
The highlight for the club remains its open men’s team which is still undefeated after six rounds of this year’s competition, and with another dominating win against the Phoenix men, show that they are real premiership material this season. The open women’s team have slipped off the pace a little in recent weeks with another defeat to a team they really should have been able to take the three points from.
Promising though this weekend was the form of the 12 boys and girls and the 14 boys, all coming home with victories under their belts.
So the trip to Ryde garnered 12 club championship points for the club – a decent return against the struggling Phoenix – but one that could have, and probably should have, been improved upon as this still allowed Phoenix to add 15 points to their club championship tally.
12 Boys
Boomerangs 6 – 4 Phoenix
A great effort again by this talented bunch of players. This week, they were fast, skilful and confident and managed to slot home goals with relative ease. The scoreline flattered the Phoenix team who were allowed a couple of easy goals towards the back end of the game. This win keeps the boys in touch with the top four and gives them hope of playing finals futsal this season. The next two weekends though against Inner West Magic and Dural Warriors will surely test their resolve.
12 Girls
Boomerangs 4 – 0 Phoenix
The 12 girls have kept their finals hopes alive with this victory against the winless Phoenix team. Sitting one point outside the top four, means that the girls will need to improve each and every game between now and the end of the season. A great effort, and something upon which some momentum can be built.
14 Boys
Boomerangs 5 – 4 Phoenix
A great win from the boys against a quality Phoenix outfit. The game really should have been more comfortably won though, and the 14s allowed Phoenix back into the game late in the second half. Like a few other Boomerangs team, these boys sit just outside the top four, and will need to improve their games every week to knock off teams above them on the ladder. These boys definitely have the potential to do just that and to cause some major upsets at the end of the season.
14 Girls
Boomerangs 1 – 2 Phoenix
After such a great start to the day with three wins from the first three match ups, this defeat was a real let down. The girls were in it for the entire match, but had trouble finishing off the opportunities they created. This result sees the girls remain near the tail end of the competition table. The remainder of the season will need to see the team further develop and improve to build their confidence.
16 Boys
Boomerangs 2 – 3 Phoenix
The 16 boys team remain as frustrated as their supporters — a team that really should be more competitive is finding new ways each week to lose matches! This was a really solid showing though against a top four team and with a bit of luck flowing their way, they may well have been able to graft out a win (or at least a draw!). Winning matches is a habit, and these boys need to start changing their losing habit quickly if they are not to remain cellar dwellers for season 13/14.
16 Girls
Boomerangs 0 – 5 Phoenix
Despite suffering their second loss, this team still remains strongly in contention for a top four finish this season. A strong Phoenix 16 girls team taught our girls a bit about strength, commitment and a winning desire in this match. These Phoenix girls will definitely be one of the favourites for minor premiers, but our girls are still in the hunt for finals futsal if they can conjure up ways to score goals and win games!
Youth Men
Boomerangs 3 – 4 Phoenix
A match that was the Boomerangs to take at half time (1-1) went pear shaped in the second half, with the Phoenix youth kicking it up a notch straight after the break by scoring a couple of quick goals. The sending off of the Boomerangs keeper half way through the second half seemed to lift the lads, and they scored while a man down to bring it back to a single goal deficit. However, Phoenix were strong enough to hold on to take the win in yet another tense and tight youth men’s match.
Open Women
Boomerangs 1 – 3 Phoenix
Another road trip – another undermanned women’s team – saw them unable to match it with their Phoenix opponents. The Boomerangs women started the match with their regular players, but needed to rely on 16s girls backing up to prop up the bench, and this gave the Phoenix women plenty of opportunities to dominate and to register only their second win of the season. An opportunity definitely lost for the women’s team to reclaim second spot on the table, and leaves them at risk of being bundled out of the top four over the next two weeks of away games.
Open Men
Boomerangs 7 – 2 Phoenix
For the second week in a row, the Boomerangs men scored seven goals in a demonstration of one of their major strengths – the ability to convert chances to goals…
Once again this group looked the goods with a slick, fast flowing offence – and an unrivaled goal scoring ability across all players (every Boomerangs men’s team regular – excluding keepers – has registered on the score sheet this season) – combined with an outstanding and punishing defense.
The men’s team remain on top of the Premier League table but with two crucial match ups over the next fortnight against Inner West and Dural, will need to take home the points and continue to dominate at both ends of the court. Something this team is more than capable of doing.

Boomerangs smashed Phoenix Futsal Club 7-2 at Ryde Sports & Community Centre on Saturday night to move six points clear at the top of the ladder.
It was all one-way traffic as the home side raced to a 3-0 halftime lead, going on with the job as Ryan Keir bagged a hat-trick and Glenn Smith grabbed a brace to put Boomerangs in the box seat ahead of a tricky double Sydney road trip to take on main rivals Inner West and Dural.
Boomerangs captain Daniel Fulton said the difference this time around was better maturity as a unit. “A number of our young boys have really grown in confidence and that goes a long way to being in a position where things are going well for us,” he said.
“We’ve set a number of small goals this season, such as reaching the 19 points we got last year [they’re on 16 now], so the next two weeks are crucial for us [against Magic and Warriors], especially with several senior players away.”
All in all, a reasonable return of four wins from the nine matches played. This needs to be the minimum standard between now and the end of the season.
