This weekend sees the final opportunity for the remaining Boomerangs team playing finals futsal to make it into a Grand Final playoff.
The Open Men’s team – as a consequence of a defeat to Dural Warriors in last week’s qualifying semi-final – this weekend will take on Campbelltown Quake at Ryde. At stake, another shot at Dural Warriors in the Grand Final and a Premier League Championship Trophy for the trophy cabinet.
Campbelltown Quake last weekend overcame a desperate Inner West Magic to take the elimination semi-final 4-1. They played strongly and had the match under control almost from the kick off.
A look at the season just past shows us that our Men’s team finished second on the ladder with a nine win, one draw and four loss record (and 28 points), matched exactly by the Quake who also finished on 28 points. The Boomerangs Men only edged into second place on goal difference with 68 goals (4.9pg) for and 42 against (3.0 pg) — a net of +26, and the Quake with 60 (4.3pg) for and 38 against (2.7pg) — a net of +22.
During the regular season, the Boomerangs Men lost their four games to Inner West Magic (R7), Dural (R8), Mountain Majik (R10) and Enfield (R12). They drew with Mascot Vipers in R2. They also lost their semi last week to Dural.
Quake lost games to Mountain Majik (R1), Phoenix (R2), Boomerangs (R4) and again the Boomerangs in R11. Quake drew with Dural Warriors in R7. After a poor start to the season, Quake have only lost twice since Round 3, both time to the Boomerangs.
Of the top four teams, Boomerangs have defeated Dural once, Inner West Magic once and most relevantly, Quake twice. Quake have defeated Inner West twice (and again in the finals), defeated Dural once and drawn once with Dural. They have not defeated Boomerangs yet this season.
So Saturday 15 February, the second Grand Finalist for Open Men’s will be determined. Both teams very closely matched, but with our Boomerangs Men having a head to head advantage during the season – and that’s about all that splits the teams. Let’s hope they can repeat the dose once again to set up a Grand Final against Dural Warriors.
