FNSW PL1 Round 7 Wrap

The final round of the first half of the FNSW Premier League 1 futsal competition was played on December 3, with the Boomerangs at home, hosting the South Coast Taipans, from Wollongong.

The Taipans struggled to maintain their position in the PL1 competition in 15/16, managing to secure enough points in the final round of the season to ensure it was Campbelltown Quake – and not themselves – that would drop back down to PL2 to make room for the Boomerangs in the 16/17 season. The club though, has been performing better in the 16/17 season, although they still sit close to the bottom of the club championship table. There was hope that the Boomers competitive age groups might find a few wins against the Taipans on their trip to Canberra.

The matches were split between Stromlo High (for the first two games of the day) and the AIS Training Halls, for the remainder. Continue reading “FNSW PL1 Round 7 Wrap”

FNSW PL1 Round 6 Wrap

November 26 saw a home round of matches against the Mountain Majik club – played at Stromlo High due to the unavailability of the regular home court at the AIS.

The Mountain Majik club have been in the top division for  a number seasons and are a mid table club with strong teams throughout their nine competitive age groups. It was expected though that the club would take a few wins from the day – but as it has been throughout this season to date, the youngest age groups struggled against stronger Sydney opposition, and it was up to the older age groups to bring home some points.

A terrific win from the Open Women and draws-which-should-have-been-wins from both the open age men and youth men rounded out the day. The 17 girls again played strongly, but just couldn’t kick up a gear to get the necessary goals to take their match. The other age groups were soundly outplayed – even though they managed to put together strong periods of play – it was not enough to remain competitive throughout the entire forty minutes. FNSW PL1 Round 5 Wrap

November 19  had the Boomerangs club travel to away matches in Sydney – for the third weekend in a row (and the fourth in the first five rounds of this season). The drive up Highway 31 and the M5 ended at All Sorts Indoor Sports Centre in Alexandria to take on the reigning Premier League 1 Club Champions, Mascot Vipers.

It was known that this would be a tough round of away matches, but as is usually the case, all teams, and all players put in a terrific effort in order to challenge for positive results. The Vipers club though were dominant across most age groups and showed the Boomerangs players – especially those new to the club – the level to which you need to play in this competition to remain competitive.

And whilst the results certainly didn’t go the travelling Boomerangs way, there were again some positive signs across all twelve matches played. The efforts of the 15 and 17 girls have been terrific over recent weeks and the Youth Men always test the opposition to their limit – wins are not far away. The Open Women are hugely competitive but have had little luck in getting positive results despite consistently playing very strongly – they pushed the undefeated Vipers women all the way in their Round 5 match. The Open Men remain in strong contention for a top four finish and semi-finals but need to make more of their chances at the offensive end.

FNSW PL1 Round 4 Wrap

Morris Iemma Indoor Sports Centre at Riverwood, Sydney was the location for the Round 4 matches in this season’s NSW Premier League 1 competition with the opposition, the always highly competitive, Enfield Rovers club.

The day commenced with the development squad matches for the younger aged boys and girls. All three teams (10 boys, 11 boys and 11/12 girls) played strongly and not one was defeated. All players are to be congratulated on their effort, skill and determination. There are certainly some future stars coming through the youngest Boomers ranks.

The competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys at 1pm and culminated in the Open Women at 6.50pm and the Men at 7.50pm.

Every week sees challenges for all the Boomerangs teams in this strong competition – without doubt the strongest regular season futsal competition in the country – and it is pleasing to see the development and improvement in performances each and every week. The results are not yet starting to register, but they certainly will be soon if the improvement continues. Each age groups shows signs of making good progress. FNSW PL1 Round 1 Wrap

Saturday 22 October had the club travel to Sydney to take on the strong Dural Warriors in Round 1 of the 16/17 season of the Football NSW Premier League 1 competition.

After being promoted at the end of last season (from PL2), the club realised that this season would be far tougher than last, and that each week’s round of matches would be highly competitive.

The day started early with two development squad matches – the 11 boys and 11/12 girls. These were two terrific games and gave the ‘baby Boomers’ some exposure to this level of futsal. Both teams played well and will have learnt a fair bit from the first outing. And of course, there were plenty of goals scored!

The competitive matches for the day started with the 12 boys and continued throughout the day with the 14 and 16 boys, the 13, 15 and 17 girls, the youth and open men and the women’s team.

NSW State Championships – Wrap

To see the photos of the two-day Championships head to our photo site.

A terrific weekend of futsal saw ten Boomerangs teams experience for the first time the NSW State Futsal Championships.  The primary purpose of competing at this event was as a pre-season warm up for the upcoming NSW Premier League competition.

The three youngest teams -10 boys, 11 boys and 11/12 girls competed in six games each at Valentine Sports Park – the State headquarters for elite futsal.  Players on all three teams had a fantastic weekend, winning some games, and losing others, but importantly learning more about how to play high-level futsal.

The 14 boys and 15 girls played their matches at Penrith and ended up with mixed results -and not enough wins to progress to the next round of matches. The boys drew their first game and then lost their next three to miss out on progressing to the finals round. The 15 girls also won just one match, losing two and also missing out on finals futsal.

At Windsor, the 16 boys, 17 girls, youth men joined the open men’s and women’s teams vying for finals futsal.

The 16 boys won three and lost one of their four pool matches making it to the quarter-finals. Unfortunately, they  were well beaten in that match by eventual champions Mascot Vipers.

The 17 girls won one match, drew another, but unfortunately it was the two losses that had them slide out of the top two and eligibility for semi-finals.

The youth men won two of their pool matches and lost one, with the second win an impressive show of force in chasing goal differential. This earned them a semi-final spot against Mountain Majik – which they won in a thriller extra time match 5-4. The Grand Final had them going toe to toe with Premier League power side Enfield Rovers and again the match could not be resolved in regular time. The lads again did it in extra time taking out the final 3-2 and being crowned NSW State Champion.

The Boomerangs women’s team had four pool games for two wins, a draw, and a solitary loss – and this good return saw them miss out on finals by a solitary goal (in goal difference). A cruel blow to a team that performed strongly.

The men’s team topped their pool winning all three preliminary round matches, pitching them against Quake in a tough semi-final, in which they were defeated 2-4. A great effort by the lads running some new combinations in preparation for the upcoming Premier League season.

All in all a terrific weekend of futsal with all ten Boomerangs teams getting valuable court time together in preparation for the upcoming season. And of course special congratulations again to the Youth Men’s team who came away with the trophy and title of Champion team of NSW – continuing the tradition of strong results from Boomerangs Youth Men over the past 4-5 years.

The club plans to be back again next season, with perhaps a few more teams.

Football NSW has provided a wrap of the weekend’s proceedings.

Preview – Grand Final Day 2016

FROM FOOTBALL NSW

Futsal Premier League 2 & AWD Futsal League 2 Grand Final Preview
The inaugural Futsal Premier League 2 trophy day features nine high-quality trophy matches at the home of Futsal in NSW, Valentine Sports Park – and six of the league’s seven clubs will be represented.

The day is also highlighted by an anticipated AWD Futsal League 2 showdown between the competition’s top-two sides Phoenix Futsal and Raiders Futsal.

Club Champions Boomerangs FS will challenge for a magnificent seven crowns including all four women’s grades (in Open Women, 17 Girls, 15 Girls & 13 Girls, plus Youth Men, 16 Boys & 12 Boys), with Eastern Suburbs Hakoah Futsal Club fielding five teams (Open Women, 17 Girls, 16 Boys, 14 Boys & 12 Boys), Sydney City Eagles three (Open Men & Youth Men, plus 14 Boys), and one each from Raiders Futsal (Open Men), Phoenix Futsal (15 Girls) and Rangers FC (13 Girls).

Six grade premiers lost their major semifinal a fortnight ago with four making amends in the preliminary final (15 girls & 16 boys premiers Raiders missing out) and ensure the top two teams feature in six of today’s deciders, fourth-placed open women’s side Easts hoping to topple premiers Boomerangs in the day’s biggest imbalance.

For all the good stuff check out the Grand Final Program.

FNSW PL2 15/16 FINALS WK 1 Review

Building on a highly successful regular season, the Boomerangs club started the finals series with a bang. Having eight team contest finals was the equal highest of any PL2 team (level with Raiders Futsal). Hakoah had seven teams contesting finals, Mt Druitt six, Sydney City Eagles five and Phoenix two.

For the Boomers this meant six teams playing qualifying finals and just two in elimination finals.

And aside from a stumble in the first match of the day – the 12 boys – the other seven Boomerangs teams won their encounters – a truly remarkable achievement in the higher pressure finals environment. Against top four teams, these were not easy matches. All teams and players are to be congratulated for the way they handled this first round of finals matches.

FNSW PL2 15/16 Final Standings

The home and away component of the 15/16 Football NSW Premier League 2 competition has now concluded; and it has certainly been a stellar season for the Boomerangs – one of the best in the club’s history.

Seventy four wins from 108 games played by the nine teams (68.5%), lifted the team to the PL2 Club Championship – a clear 12 points (4 wins) ahead of second placed Raiders Futsal. The 74 wins also surpassed the early season target set of six wins per round for the season.

Of the nine Boomerangs teams competing, eight will be contesting finals over the next three weeks. Continue reading “FNSW PL2 15/16 Final Standings”
