Round nine of the 17/18 Premier League 2 season had the club at home to Sydney Futsal Club. Earlier this season, away in Sydney, the club took home six wins from the nine matches, going down in the 12 and 16 boys and the open women. The aim for this round was to improve on that result.

Development Squad Matches
The 10 boys played a scratch match against local side Gungahlin. It was a highly competitive and skilful game that saw both sides put together some terrific periods of play. The 11 boys took on a visiting Sydney Futsal club side in what was again a close, well matched and highly entertaining game. There was no match for the 11/12 girls.
12 Boys: Boomerangs 0 – 0 Sydney Futsal Club
Earlier this season the Boomers 12 boys were humbled by this strong Sydney futsal club team and were determined not to let them score so freely this round. The boys started strongly and were defending well as a unit in front of stand-in keeper Liam Cook. The match was evenly poised when at the nine-minute mark of the first half the heavy rains started to penetrate through the AIS training hall roof to stop the match. The leak was not a big one, but the match could not continue until the drips stopped and the floor could be dried – this took until the end of the scheduled period of play and, unfortunately, the game had to be abandoned. It was a shame for the travelling Sydney lads that they could not complete their match, and for the Boomers boys who were playing some great futsal to match it with the visitors until the break in play.

13 Girls: Boomerangs 2 – 0 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 1-0)
In Round 2 the Boomerangs 13 girls took this match 2-1 and were looking to repeat the result and perhaps improve on the scoreline. After an even first period of play, the home side gained the ascendency with a terrific goal to Sofia Palywoda – who in recent weeks has been making a habit of scoring crucial goals. The second half saw the girls defend strongly to repel each and every forward raid by the visitors. Halfway through the period saw a terrific goal from new player, Meg Roden. From this position, the girls defended solidly whilst continuing to threaten at the offensive end. A solid win which helps them on their path to an elusive finals spot.

14 Boys: Boomerangs 4 – 3 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 2-3)
The Boomerangs 14s took out this match 6-2 in Round 2 and were confident they could again rack up another win. The travellers though had other ideas and came out with speed and determination, netting in the 3rd, 9th and again the 13th minute to take a 3-2 lead into the break. The boys took heed of the coach’s instructions in the break, as they worked harder at the defensive end in the second stanza, whilst making the most of their front court forays. Two quick goals in the first five minutes of the second half and a super defensive effort saw the lads take the match 4-3 and earn a valuable three competition points to keep them in finals contention.

15 Girls: Boomerangs 7 – 0 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 5-0)
The 15 girls managed to secure a tightly fought victory in this corresponding match in Round 2, early this season (3-1). This team has been in such solid form of recent times, it was expected that they would improve on this earlier season result. Three early goals set the tone for the match and another two prior to the half-time whistle had the girls comfortable at the break 5-0. The second half saw consolidation and some great defence as the visitors tried their best to get back into the match. A clean sheet and two additional goals saw the final score at 7-0.

16 Boys: Boomerangs 1 – 5 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 1-3)
The tough season for the 16 boys continues with another solid team to come up against in this Round 9. In Round 2, the Sydney club took the match comfortably 7-2. The boys started well, despite conceding a quick goal, levelling it up again in the seventh minute. The visitors though retook the lead not long after and snuck in another just before the halftime whistle to see the home team with a two-goal deficit at the break. Determined not to be steamrolled, the 16s worked hard at the defensive end throughout the second period and limited the damage to two additional goals, whilst not taking being able to make the most of the chances created at the offensive end.

18 Girls: Boomerangs 5 – 1 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 2-1)
The 18 girls knew they were up for a tough battle after the visitors scored early in this match and held the lead for the majority of the first half. It was only goals in the 19th (Ineke Voigt) and 20th (Alex McKenzie – her fourth goal for the day!) minutes that brought the home side back into the game and with that, the momentum coming out of the break. The home side dominated the second half, scoring three additional goals and holding tight at the defensive end to take the match – in the end – quite comfortably 5-1. An impressive performance, given that four of the regular starters for the 18s were unavailable for the match and many of the 15s were backing up for their second game of the day – including four of the five goal scorers.

Youth Men: Boomerangs 3 – 1 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 1-0)
The youth men had a real battle on their hands against this feisty opposition – a team they managed to squeeze a win out of (4-3) the last time they met in October. For the majority of the first half, it was a seesawing affair with much energy expended getting up and down the court, but with no goals registered until Elie Darwich slotted home at the 18th-minute mark. A more disciplined Boomerangs youth after the break worked harder at the defensive end and looked to patiently create quality opportunities at the offensive end of the court. They were rewarded with a second to Darwich at the 32nd-minute mark and a third (Jayde James-Ward) some five minutes later to take out a hard-fought and well-earned victory.

Open Women: Boomerangs 3 – 1 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 0-0)
The open women’s team were looking to atone for a narrow 2-3 loss last time they met this Sydney Futsal Club women’s team. The first half saw a very even contest, with both teams patiently looking to build scoring opportunities whilst focussing on their defensive efforts. After the break, it was the visitors bringing the scorers into action first, with a goal in the very first minute of the second stanza. It took several minutes for the home side to click into gear, but as they did, they built pressure across the court and made it difficult for the visitors to maintain any quality possession. A goal by Alex Martens in the 27th minute was followed up by others from Rachael Corbett and Nicole Jalocha close to the final whistle. A solid, and hard-earned win for the ladies – exactly what they will need to continue to do between now and the end of the season, and throughout the finals campaign.

Open Men: Boomerangs 8 – 2 Sydney Futsal Club (ht 2-0)
When these two teams met earlier in the season, it was a comfortable 6-0 victory to the travelling Boomerangs. With this recent history, the men knew the expectations would be for no less than a similar victory for this home round. The match started in a flurry with Jake Wilsener getting himself in the right position to slot home three goals in the first five minutes of the match. With the tone now set, the Boomerangs men set to hammer home their advantage, and they did by netting another two in the first 25, whilst keeping a clean sheet.
The second half saw another scored quickly by Daniel Giovinazzo, and as the game opened up (and became less defensive) a further five goals were scored in the final 12 minutes – three to the Boomerangs and two to the visitors – including a goal to ‘keeper Nick van Aalst, after he decided to go for a crowd-pleasing run up the court when an open mid-court presented itself. A good win, and one to help the goal difference, but with a second half that lacked some discipline and intense defensive effort.

A good day for the club, in terms of wins, with seven wins and only the single recorded loss in the 16 boys. The upshot of the 12 boys abandoned game will be clarified over the coming week and could involve rescheduling a rematch – or alternatively a split of the points. This will be confirmed by FNSW.
Check out the Club Championship after nine weeks of the 17/18 competition – it sees the club hold on to the third spot, 17 points behind Eastern Suburbs Hakoah and Raiders Futsal.
The final two rounds for calendar-year 2017 are away matches – firstly to the Central Coast on December 9th and to Hornsby against Phoenix before a break in the season. 2018 will see the final three rounds contested and finals series, for those teams that finish top four.
